Post your ebikes in the news stories here! :D

I'll kick it off with this one about powered bikes in general. The view here is that ebikes are generally law abiding and quiet/considerate to other users of the bike path.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-10-05/tighter-laws-peddled-for-motorised-bicycles/3299210

Quotes from the article:

"I think what it was originally meant to do was for quiet electric motors with low power to assist cyclists get up big hills. But what's happened is it's translated into whacking a two-stroke lawn mower engine onto your bike and roaring off into the sunset."

and (talking about lawnomower bikes):

"Those things do have high power and they also put out about 10 times the CO2 emissions of most electric scooters out there and it makes a difference,"

In April 2001 Canada amended the federal Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations to recognize the electric power-assisted bicycle.

At the time the Canada Gazette reported:
Continuing to subject power-assisted bicycles to the safety standards for limited-speed motorcycles would, to all intents and purposes, have prevented this type of vehicle from being marketed in Canada, which would have deprived Canadians of a safe and non-polluting alternative mode of transportation.

The whole idea behind having a defined class of electric bicycle with power and speed limited and few other restrictions is to encourage their widespread adoption and use...

Is 1200km in a week really the world record? Have at it lads :D

Simon

Here's one that I posted a while back that didn't garner much interest, but maybe here it may be seen. Its good to know he's got the world record covered :D

Agreed, but if the power restrictions are excessive, then you might as well just walk. And licensing (of people and vehicles) is a massive source of revenue so they don't like people getting around for free. But then who pays for the bike paths?

This one has its own thread, but I'll post it here anyway:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2011/10/04/mb-electric-bike-killed.html

"A 21-year-old woman was killed Monday when the electric bicycle she was riding collided with a truck near Altona."

Sad story of a girl killed on an ebike, could have been any bike in this case I think.

Edit: I thought I'd add that I'd prefer if this thread wasn't used for new ebike products etc. which seem to get their own threads anyway.

Simon.

Yeah but did he do over 1000 miles in any given week of his trip? I hope so, the record seems a bit lame (and should be held by an ESer).

1200km is only 745.6 miles - Kingfish did 828.4 miles between July 26th and Aug. 1st.
