Just wondering if anybody has seen these? They look pretty crazy, and even better than the current a123 cells. http://www.saftbatteries.com/doc/Documents/defence/Cube769/VL%206A%20Data%20Sheet_final.1386f8e5-cf15-411c-bd70-4f91e50a2672.pdf

FFS. Racers will be happy, but c'mon. Who else is going to make use of a battery that you can discharge completely in 36 seconds?

I couldn't imagine shorting even one out; 1,600A pulse, and that's only what it's RATED for. What will the internal resistance allow? o_O

Regardless, these look to be some pretty incredible cells.

• 100% columbic efficiency
• Maintenance free battery
• Long cycle life
- > 80% of initial capacity
remaining after 5,000 cycles at
100% DOD

- >500000 cycles during shallow
cycling (SOC Δ ~3%)
• Projected 15 years calendar life

Plus they're 6Ah each!

"sold only as complete systems"!!! Big buckaroos!

I think the internal resistance will allow energy-discharge to occur at about the same rate as in dynamite.

To the casual observer, the energy discharge will probably look the same too.

but the specific energy is poor?
64wh/kg?

Hmm, you're right. These things are huge for 6Ah cells; 35mm by 165mm. Wonder why. :?

That may be true, but as a French company, thats a good advertisment for them!

Yes they make high power Lithium for mostly un-manned sattelites and they certainly don't talk to us e-bike folks. :)

Well, as U know, they made quite good NiMh packs for Ebikes, so there is hope yet!

don't worry lithium is going to really improve this year. there is so much money being pumped into lithium research that it is a sure thing. its only a matter of time before it to filters through to ebikes. ebikes are a decent market share of battery markets now and companies do recognize that.

Today John Mcain announced a 300 Million dollar reward to any company who makes the best electric car battery IF he's elected president.

SAFT have supplied lithium cells to the solar car racing community a number of times. They do deal with the "small guys" for certain things. Those cars use less power then many ebikes here (1-3kW), and can break 160km/h!

A number of EVs are using Saft flooded NiCd cells.

80mi range!

Awesome cells but Saft has never showed it self much in the ebike communities. Those solar racers are usually heavily sponsored, so I'm sure that why they do those.

Here's their webpage about ebikes:

I think I'll write to them and ask if they would be interested in supplying a sample of these batteries for Doctorbass to test:

and if there is any way they could supply them for ebike use. Will point them at this thread.

I posted something about that in 2007...: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=2620&hilit=saft
they seems very attractive... but for sure they are pricy.. and almost made for military equipment... the electronic engineer at my job already used SAFT battery for their great lifetime...

I would be glad to test them  .. or /and torture testing them.. if needed...

I emailed them and asked if they could send you a sample to test. I hope that was OK? :D Whether they will reply or not I have no idea. It was the head office in France I emailed. At least they will speak your language! I also asked them whether they could envisage providing these cells for ebike use, maybe through a subsidiary.
Well, you can only ask, can't you. I was always brought up to believe that:
"You can ask for ANYTHING as long as you are prepared to accept the answer No"

I'm not sure they will send individual samples, it notes on the spec sheet that it's only sold as an assembled unit. Either way 750 amps continuous for a 6 a/h cell is very impressive. I am using saft 1/2 D nicads from a local surplus store, i'd guess they must be 5-10 years old and they still perform at full capacity. I would consider saft to be the best battery manufacturer currently on the market.
