It's not a joke actually.

Pictures of that bike have been floating around the net for a few years now.. but recently there was a documentary on the Discovery Chanel showing the bike and builder..

He is using flex mylar type solar cells with a Lead acid pack and a hub motor in the front wheel ( with a crystalyte controller. i recognized the white sticker right away ! lol )

The bike can be plugged in with a regular SLA charger or left in the sun for a LONG time to get some charge back into the pack.. i don't think the panels in the wheels are worth the expense and effort for the return involved... but that's just my opinion.

Hmmm....here's the main website:

http://www.therapyproducts.com/products_sunnybike.html

I don't see a hubmotor in their picture, or any hubmotor wiring, etc. The solar panels look too thin and reflective (since the idea is to absorb and convert the light), and without associated wiring either. And even if those panels operate properly, they're too small to power the bike. The best they could do is recharge the batteries at maybe an amp or two. I'm dubious.

i was just looking at that picture, it looks like a photo shop job, and i dont see the wires either.

Couldn't follow that link, Ypedal. I was blocked! Hate crap like that...makes me not want to watch their material at all. Then it makes me want to try to circumvent their asinine geographical restrictions.

The USA, last I checked. I also found this link:
http://broadband.discoverychannel.ca/?vid=5974
but it's blocked too. I'll try some things to get it to play....

Same message on another browser. I wonder if they're blocking US Comcrap users. I didn't find a U.S. discovery channel source. Oh well, not important enough to bother with trying international proxy servers...

hmm, i just watched the video
plug it in for six hours, then let the sun do the work.....huh
ah well even if they dont work very efficiently it would sure be an effective argument against the ebike naysayers saying electricity comes from coal.

my bad, the video won't play for me either.
I think there's a way to spoof an IP address outside the US to make it work.

I searched you tube for it, but stumbled across space travel by bike http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPbkZsw7GjE&mode=related&search= were Canadian so everything is bilingual

I tried to figure out how to doanload it and post it on youtube.. but i don't have a capture card.. and there is no download option.. argh.

You can dig through the page's code to find the URL for the video itself, then download the whole video directly into a new browser window and then save to your hard drive. If you can post the page source, I can probably find the URL if it isn't obvious. Sometimes sites like this try and conceal the URL with a bunch of javascript that can make deciphering it more difficult. Being "born in the USA" (which wasn't my fault and I had nothing to do with), I'm blocked from getting to that video page containing the URL.
