Hehe... May remind some of the year there was no summer, or, Eighteen Hundred and Froze to Death... and current concerns about "global climate change" helping drive sales of the modern Bettery-Electric Bicycle.

Nutshell? (Why do folks say that?...) To build a bike trailer as "multi-use". Just FYI. Am planning right now to get a bike-pulled "rickshaw". Trailer and "cargo" weight about 500lbs, and with bike with power-assist. So shorter distances and level grounds with "cargo" including tourists and ashtrays and ice buckets for chilling drinks, luggage, etc. (End result is to promo electric traction and to sell ebikes.)

Yawn. Typical urban commute.

In the continuing series... this "Top 5 Cool Bike Tech Of 2016" actually includes (four wheel) skateboards... a lit helmet... etc, but all that operate with some sort of bettery-electric assist. :)

Testing new bike. 55-80kph. 14-30km range. 21kg. Hand wound samarium–cobalt (SmCo) motor is 96% efficient at optimum rpm and capable of 5kw. Charged from hydro and wind sourced power so less co2 than eating to walk or cycle.

Samarium? ES Dictionary "Search found 49 matches: +samarium (as in "samarium-cobalt magnet").

(Wiki:)
Although classified as a rare earth element, samarium is the 40th most abundant element in the Earth's crust and is more common than such metals as tin. Samarium occurs with concentration up to 2.8% in several minerals including cerite, gadolinite, samarskite, monazite and bastnäsite, the last two being the most common commercial sources of the element. These minerals are mostly found in China, the United States, Brazil, India, Sri Lanka and Australia; China is by far the world leader in samarium mining and production.

... and:
The major commercial application of samarium is in samarium-cobalt magnets, which have permanent magnetization second only to neodymium magnets; however, samarium compounds can withstand significantly higher temperatures, above 700 °C (1,292 °F), without losing their magnetic properties, due to the alloy's higher Curie point.
