Bike Friendly City?

Phuket:- More than 100 shiny nails spread along a bicycle lane in the southern province of Phuket on Thursday morning. It remains unclear how these sharp items ended up on the spot.
“We counted them and their number went past 140,” Sukanya Sairaya told ASTV Manager.
Being one of regular cyclists in Phuket, Sukanya has also heard that a bicycle got flat tire on Wednesday morning in the same area.
So far, she has refused to believe that someone deliberately littered the bicycle lane with nails.
“There is no reason to do so,” Sukanya said.
After collecting the nails with her friends, she only suggested that motorists stopped parking their vehicles on the bicycle lanes.
“If you park your vehicles there, you are in effect forcing cyclists to swerve out of the bicycle lane and that may cause accidents,” Sukanya said.
Cycling trend has now caught on in the Thai society.
Bicycle shops have mushroomed and bicycle lanes have emerged in many areas across Thailand particularly in big cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket.
However with cycling being more and more popular, social friction is likely to emerge from it.
Many motorists have openly expressed their frustration and anger towards bicycle riders who come to share public roads. They feel these cyclists have slowed down traffic flow and increased the risks of road accidents for no sound reason.
“It’s dangerous on busy street. You know it’s risky. So why you still hit the road with your bicycle?” asks a Facebook user.
Many motorists show no sympathy for cyclists who got hit and killed by cars on street.

A bicyclist was killed in Solano County on Saturday morning when he was hit by a truck while participating in the Davis Double Century bike ride, authorities said.
The 50-year-old bicyclist from Rocklin was riding north on Tremont Road in Dixon at about 5:10 a.m. when he entered the intersection of Sparling Lane, the California Highway Patrol said.
Tremont has a stop sign at the intersection, but Sparling does not. When the bicyclist, whose name has not been released, entered the intersection, he did not stop at the stop sign and ended up riding into the path of a Kenworth tractor-trailer truck pulling a set of double trailers.
The driver, identified as 62-year-old Jose Rios, was traveling east on Sparling at about 50 to 55 mph and could not stop in time, the CHP reported. He ran over the bicyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

WINDSOR, Colo. (AP) — Residents in a small northern Colorado town are on edge after a bicyclist was shot and killed on a rural road, about a month after a woman was shot in the neck as she drove through the area on a busy highway.
A passing driver found the body of John Jacoby, 48, on Monday alongside a road in Windsor, a town of about 19,000 southeast of Fort Collins. He was shot twice sometime that morning.
Authorities say there is nothing to link the two shootings, but the FBI is helping investigate.
The shootings also follow a series of reports of people having their windows mysteriously shattered while driving in northern Colorado. Investigators so far have found no evidence of gunshots in those cases.
"Half the town is very scared and the other half is sad," Tony Bates, a longtime friend of Jacoby's, told The Fort Collins Coloradoan newspaper. "I went from being sad to angry — really angry — and so are a lot of other people in this town. This just doesn't happen in this town."
Bates said he initially thought the shooting was random, "but then you hear that he was shot twice, and that is not random."
Jacoby's death came less than a month after Cori Romero was shot in the neck on Interstate 25 near Windsor. Romero was driving April 22 when her windshield suddenly shattered, and she realized she was wounded, authorities said. She managed to pull over and call for help.
Neither the police nor FBI disclosed details about why the FBI is helping investigate Jacoby's death, Windsor's first homicide in eight years.
FBI spokeswoman Amy Sanders said she could not comment on the details of the agency's involvement because of the ongoing investigation.
Around the time that Romero was shot, a series of motorists reported having their vehicle windows shattered while driving in Larimer and Weld counties.
In one case, a sheriff's van transporting prisoners was hit by a projectile on I-25, shattering a passenger window, authorities said. In another, a motorist said his front driver's side window was broken and might have been shot out near Interstate 76 in Weld County. Another man said his rear window was shattered in Loveland.
No injuries were reported, and authorities have not found proof that bullets broke the windows.
Jacoby worked as a part-time park caretaker for the town and as a grocery store bagger, according to the Coloradoan. He was well-known in Windsor and rarely missed a Windsor High School football, basketball or baseball game.
"He would always come in early to the parks shop and chat, especially about sports," Parks & Open Space Manager Wade Willis said. "He seemed to have a special bond with everyone he encountered."
Jacoby did not have a driver's license and rode his bike every day. His funeral will be held Friday.

Luxembourg is improving as a cycling-friendly nation after jumping from 19th to 13th place over the course of 12 months in a European ranking.
The 2015 Barometer published by the European Cyclists' Federation saw the Grand Duchy pedal to just behind France, namely because no cyclists were killed on the country's roads, but also because of the high number of pro-cycling supporters.
Denmark won top spot in the ranking, followed by the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Germany and Belgium.
Countries were ranked by five criteria: the percentage of people riding a bicycle, safety, the importance of cycle tourism, sales of new bicycles and the presence of pro-cycling activists in national associations.
The study's author explained Luxembourg's positive positioning “on the criterion of security as there were zero cyclists killed in Luxembourg according to the European Care database on road safety" explained Chloe Mispelon of the European Cyclists' Federation.
The Federation, which has its headquarters in Brussels, aims to mobilise European and international institutions so that cycling becomes a mode of transport in itself.
Within the category of cycling militants per capita, Luxembourg ranked second with 2,906 cycling supporters per one million inhabitants.
When it comes to the popularity of cycling for tourism, Luxembourg fell back to 17th place, well behind the most popular country, Finland.
Luxembourg was also one of the countries which sold the least number of new bikes (in 24th position). This could be explained by more competitive prices found in the Greater Region, where it is common for Luxembourg residents to shop. However, the study did not go into bike ownership rates.

A woman riding a bicycle was struck by a train and killed Thursday, May 21, near downtown Riverside, officials said.
The incident was reported about 11:10 a.m. where the tracks cross Mission Inn Avenue, said Lena Kent, spokeswoman for BNSF, the railroad company that maintains the tracks.
The woman, who officials said appeared to be a transient in her 30s, was riding east on Mission Inn Avenue when a train traveling southbound passed her, according to a Riverside Police news release. Immediately after the southbound train passed, the woman continued east.
Unknown to her, a northbound train was approaching the intersection. It struck her and she died on the scene, Riverside Police Lt. Frank Assumma said.
The woman tried to cross the tracks while the arms were down, bells were chiming and the lights were flashing, Kent said.
The engine came to rest between Third and Spruce streets. The train was blocking traffic at the crossings at Mission Inn Avenue and at Third Street.
Police officials were not able to identify the woman at the accident scene.
Fire and police officials are investigating, said Riverside Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff DeLaurie. About noon, investigators were walking the length of track looking beneath the train.
A mangled, dark-colored bicycle could be seen wedged beneath the front end.
A Metrolink train heading through the area to Oceanside was canceled due to the crash. Buses were dispatched to get passengers to their destinations, officials announced.
The roads were reopened by 2 p.m., Assumma said.

JOSHUA TREE — A 58-year-old Joshua Tree man was killed in a traffic collision at about 8:15 p.m. Sunday, May 24, on Sunburst Avenue south of Jericho Way.
According to a California Highway Patrol report, the man, whose name is being withheld by the coroner’s office pending notification of next of kin, was not wearing a helmet and did not have lights on when he rode a Schwinn Sidewinder bicycle north on Sunburst Avenue.
According to the report, Derek Patrick Burnham, 26, of Yucca Valley, was traveling north on Sunburst Avenue in a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic at about 50 mph, approaching the cyclist from the rear.
The report notes that the front right of the Chevrolet struck the cyclist, causing him  to be ejected. Burnham stopped at the scene, call 911 and performed CPR with instruction from dispatchers.
The cyclist was later pronounced dead is the scene.
An investigation into the accident led to Burnham’s arrest for outstanding warrants. He was booked into the Morongo Basin Jail.
The collision is under investigation by the highway patrol.

Funny how much more likely news stories are to mention whether the cyclist was wearing a helmet when he was murdered than they are to mention whether the murderer was fooling around with his phone at the time.

I mean, on those rare occasions when a cop gets run down by a fleeing suspect or a drunk driver, do they ever tell us whether the cop was wearing a helmet? And would people be quicker to shift blame to the cop and call him an "organ donor" if he wasn't?

OCEANSIDE — A bicyclist suffered fatal injuries in Oceanside Wednesday night when he swerved into on-coming traffic and was hit by an SUV, police said.
The 54-year-old man was pedaling westbound along the right shoulder of state Route 76 about 8:50 p.m., witnesses told Oceanside police. As he neared Frazee Street, the cyclist then veered into an eastbound lane.
One driver was able to swerve onto the right shoulder to avoid the cyclist, but a second driver had no time to react, and hit the bike, police traffic Sgt. Ignacio Lopez said. He said the rider was pinned under the Acura MDX as it came to a stop. Several people stopped to help until police and paramedics got there.
The bicycle rider died of his injuries. His name was not released. The Acura driver, a 75-year-old Fallbrook man, and his wife who was riding with him were not injured, Lopez said.
He said the cyclist is a local homeless man who smelled of alcohol, and he may have been under the influence when he lost control of the bike. The SUV driver had been drinking, but passed a breath test with an alcohol level below that considered to be under the influence.

PEMBERTON, B.C.—Three people are dead after a man police believe was impaired drove into a group of cyclists out for a weekend ride on the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
Pemberton RCMP said they received a call from a witness about a driver crashing into three men cycling along Highway 99, about 60 kilometres northeast of Whistler, around noon on Sunday. Two of the cyclists were killed, as was a passenger in the vehicle that hit them.
The condition of the third cyclist is unknown, said RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair.
“The problem is the area is relatively remote with no cellphone coverage and spotty radio reception,” LeClair said. “We do have a collision-investigation team on scene, as well as our local members and the coroner.”
LeClair said reports that the driver was impaired at the time of the crash are based on observations from witnesses and police officers at the scene.
“I don’t know what the particulars of that are but I suspect it’s based on their observations and their experience,” he said.
One officer accompanied the driver as he was airlifted to a hospital in Vancouver.
The Mounties have not released the names of anyone involved in the crash.
The families of the two dead cyclists have been notified, said LeClair, but the identity of the deceased passenger has yet to be confirmed.
Police say Highway 99 will be closed for an extended period of time.
“It’s a very serious case,” said LeClair. “It’s concerning when something like this happens and we want to work to make sure that all the evidence is collected and processed properly.
No charges have been laid but police say the investigation is ongoing.

http://www.kvoa.com/story/29336722/harassment-on-rillito-loop-leaves-female-bicyclist-shaken
TUCSON - Another report of a woman being harassed while exercising along the Rillito bike path brings the total up to at least five in the last two months.
Friday morning, the most recent victim, who's asked not to be named, went for a bike ride along the Rillito Loop as she does several times a week. This trip was different.
When she got to the Tucson Mall area, she was already a distance ahead of her group, and encountered a man who she believes had ill intentions.
"There was really nobody around and it was just me and him, and I was about 20 to 15 feet away when I noticed him look over his left shoulder," she said. "That's when he turned around and spread his arms to try and block me."
The whole time the man was yelling and swearing at her. "I though it was maybe because I was cyclist, I was alone, maybe because I was a female," she said.
She swerved to avoid him, getting away before anything could happen.
"At that point I was like, I need to get as far away from here as possible," she said.
This is not the first time women have been harassed in the area. Back in April, three different women reported being groped, and late last week, another says she was punched in the face by a homeless man.
Both the city and the county are keeping their eyes on the Loop. The Tucson Police Department has special patrols out Tuesday night, and the Pima County Sheriff's Department will step up their effort with volunteers starting Thursday morning.
