Patricia Keenan, Kelowna cyclist, mourned after fatal crash into car door
Cycling advocate says death highlights need for safer conditions and more driver education

Friends and family are mourning the death of a Kelowna, B.C. woman in who died last week after crashing into a car door.

On July 14, Patricia Keenan was cycling behind a friend on Bernard Avenue, towards the city's downtown, when someone suddenly opened the driver's side door of a parked car.

Keenan, 38, slammed into the door and, despite wearing a helmet, sustained serious head injuries. She died in hospital two days later.

Keenan had a 10-year-old son.

"That is such a terrible waste. It's so sad for a young mother to come to her demise in this fashion," said Keenan's neighbour Hans Kruiswyk.

Getting 'doored' common, advocate says
Cycling advocates say the community has a long way to go to make city streets safe for bike riders.

Kelowna Cycling Coalition spokesman Landon Bradshaw told CBC News that getting "doored" by motorists who have not checked their mirrors is a serious issue for cyclists.

"It is not a bizarre occurrence," said Bradshaw. "It's happened to me. I know plenty of cyclists that it's happened to."

Bradshaw said he believes conditions have improved for cyclists on the streets of Kelowna, in B.C.'s Okanagan region, in recent years. But he said more driver education is needed to prevent similar tragedies.

A Hispanic man biking to work in Williamsburg yesterday was assaulted by two white men who beat him and called him a "frocking immigrant."
According to the Daily News' police sources, the 25-year-old man was biking near Jackson and Leonard Streets at around 12:25 p.m. 5:15 a.m. when he was shoved off his bicycle by the two men, who punched and kicked him and hit him with a skateboard.
"You frocking immigrant. You don't belong in this country," the men allegedly told the victim.
The Daily News reports that the victim was treated at Woodhull Hospital for minor injuries, and that the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the crime.
Detective Kelly Ort, answering the phone at the NYPD's press office, had no information on the attack, which occurred in the 94th Precinct.
The number of misdemeanor assaults reported in the 94th Precinct have increased from 113 to 147 over the past year [PDF], an increase of 30%, while the number of felony assaults have increased from 52 to 59.

A prominent Albuquerque homebuilder riding his bicycle in the Tanoan Country Club gated community was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver Sunday.
Reed "Bart" Rutledge was riding his bike blocks from his home when police said a "low life drunk" hit and killed him.
Many of the upscale residential developments in Albuquerque were designed and built by Rutledge Homes, the family that mourns the loss of their go-to-guy, Bart Rutledge.
"You would not want anyone better, know anyone better than him probably," friend Floyd DeGrodt said.
Rutledge was a father and a devoted son who spent much of his time tending to an ailing father.
"I know it's going to be devastating for Bart's mother because she's been having to take care of Bart's dad," DeGrodt said.
He was also an active family man who exercised behind the safety of secured gates on the quiet grounds of sprawling Tanoan.
"He needed to because he just had both knees replaced within the last year or so. He was well aware he needed to be physically active," DeGrodt said.
Sunday afternoon, Rutledge was on his bike when police say 26-year-old Coulter Cook careened down 15 mph streets, hitting and killing Rutledge with this silver Dodge Ram truck.
"This drunk driver, despicable guy. Hits him, kills him. Now, we have him in custody and his passenger. I can't express to you... Enough already with the drunk driving," APD spokesman Simon Drobik said.
Cook was walked into police booking downtown just before 5 p.m. When asked by reporters if he was drunk at the time of the crash, he responded, "No, ma'am."
"I couldn't believe it actually happened within Tanoan," DeGrodt said.
No one is allowed past the gates without permission. Police still haven't said whether Cook lives in the gated subdivision.
Cook is expected to be arraigned on charges Monday.

Atlanta Police have arrested the man whom they say struck and killed a bicyclist over the weekend and then fled the scene.

Roman Redding, 32, has been charged with vehicular homicide, failure to maintain a lane, and leaving the scene of an accident.

APD officers say a man, later identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner's office as Calvin Foster, was walking his bike on the sidewalk on Cleveland Avenue early Sunday morning when he was hit by a car.

A witness told officers that the 2003 Chevrolet Malibu was swerving before it hit the 41-year-old Atlanta man, who died at the scene. The driver fled and, APD says, was tracked by a K9 officer "before the trail was lost."

Redding received treatment for his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital and has since been transported to Fulton County Jail.

The killing was the 8th pedestrian death in Atlanta this year, according to the police department. APD reported 18 pedestrian deaths in 2014.

A 72-year-old man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a collision involving an electric bicycle on Highway 61 Wednesday afternoon. OPP say around 1:20 p.m. the man was driving an northbound E-bike on Highway 61 in the far right lane. He moved to the inside lane, which caused a tractor-trailer behind him to brake abruptly and strike the rear of the E-bike. The driver of the E-bike lost control and was ejected from it. He landed in the southbound lane where he was hit by a southbound Dodge truck, police say. No one else was injured in the incident, but the highway was closed between Arthur and Princess streets for about two hours. The investigation is ongoing."

The "electric bicycle" "E-bike" in this case was a (large, heavy) "scooter" style bike that may have had an already dead/dying (maybe lead-acid) battery. With "lousy" acceleration" anyway (due partly just to mass alone). AKA "poor design".

Re above (Queens Blvd. NYC) "After a day on the road traveling at the mayor-approved speed of 25 mph, it's clear that there is still work to be done to convince the city to slow down."

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — A man was riding his bike on Robinson Street in the Fan District around 3:15 a.m. on Monday when a car pulled up to him and started shooting.

A bullet hit the victim in the leg, but he is going to be okay.

This random violence is troubling to people who live and work in the fan. 8News reporter Kristin Smith met with a couple of cyclists riding through the same intersection where the shooting happened. “I ride through here all the time. I feel really safe riding through here asking as you use some common sense about it,” said Brandon McPherson.

Another cyclist spoke on how the violence is not something he’s happy about. “It raises my awareness. You always need to be vigilant about riding,” said John Jenks.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions.

According to police, the victim says he didn’t recognize the person who shot him. The investigation is still on going.

SFPD Park Station Captain John Sanford has made good on his promise: Officers were out this morning ticketing bike commuters who failed to comply with a strict application of the stop sign law on Page Street and the Wiggle. One bike rider said police justified her ticket by adding their own fictional flourish to the law.
Laura Kiniry, 41, said she canceled a doctor appointment she was biking to after receiving a $234 ticket (plus court fees) because she didn’t put her foot down after climbing uphill on Baker Street to make a left onto Page.
Kiniry, who has biked in the city for 18 years, said she saw two people on bikes already pulled over by police at Page and Baker. She assumed she wouldn’t receive a traffic citation for making a safe, practical near-stop after pedaling uphill at single-digit speeds.
“Maybe I didn’t come to a complete stop. I looked both ways,” said Kiniry. She said the officer told her, “‘You have to have at least one of your feet down.'” That supposed requirement appears nowhere in the California Vehicle Code.
Kiniry says she told the officer, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to bike. I’m not going downtown anymore. I’m terrified, I don’t know if I’m allowed to pull up next to a car, I don’t know what I’m allowed to do anymore. I can’t afford this.”
Today’s ticket blitz came a week after the Wiggle “stop-in” demonstration highlighting the absurdity of strictly enforcing the stop sign law. The law makes no distinction between bikes and cars, and expects bicycle riders to make a full stop, rather than the normal practice of slowing and yielding to others.
Demonstrators on bikes lined up on Steiner Street before each, in turn, came to a full stop at Waller Street and turned left, moving the queue at a snail’s pace. While no uniformed SFPD officers stuck around at the demonstration, one officer drove past the queue and said on his loudspeaker, “Thank you for obeying the law.”
SFPD was right back at the same intersection this morning handing out tickets to bike commuters who didn’t come to a full stop.

WEST VALINDA >> Deputies found a body of a man on a dirt lot early Thursday morning.
Lt. Dave Coleman of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said deputies got a call of a “man down” in the 14900 block of Janetdale Street around 3:20 a.m. and discovered a man with what appeared to be blunt force trauma to his body.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Folks who did call heard some shouting about 3:20,” Coleman said.
Authorities have not identified the dead man. Ed Winter, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner - Coroner, described the man as Latino between 25 to 30.
The body was discovered in a lot in the unincorporated county area known as West Valinda. There is graffiti and a drawing of a paw print on the wall next to the lot. Janetdale Street is located next to streets that are in West Covina.
Yvonne Diaz was visiting her grandmother who lives on the West Covina side. She said her grandmother heard car doors slamming early Thursday morning.
“She heard multiple car doors. No gunshots,” Diaz said.
She said her grandmother didn’t pay any mind because cars get stolen and vandalism occurs in the neighborhood.
Diaz, who saw the body, said the man was shirtless but wore black shorts. There was a bicycle lying nearby.
“There was a brick next to him. His face had dried blood,” Diaz said.
Oscar Bugante who lives on a nearby West Covina street said he heard nothing because he had the air conditioner and fan on. He said a deputy woke him up about 4 a.m.
“He said there was a crime,” Bugante said.
Bugante looked out of his bedroom window, saw a lot of law enforcement, a bicycle and the body of a shirtless man. A light was directed on the body, he added.
“It was too far to recognize,” he said.
Bugante was shocked. He’s lived in the area since 1989 and doesn’t recall a body being found there before.
“This is a quiet neighborhood,” Bugante said.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man found in a vacant lot next to a white bicycle in Los Angeles County during the early morning hours ofDeputies responded to a "person down" call at 3:20 a.m. in the 14900 block of Janetdale Street in Valinda, an unincorporated area of the San Gabriel Valley. Thursday, according to the sheriff's department.
A woman who claimed to be the man's girlfriend and mother to his 1-year-old child said he came to her window Wednesday night at about 11 p.m. He looked scared and wanted to come in to use her phone, she added.
According to her, before she could let him in, he disappeared. She said he was a transient who spent a lot of time in the neighborhood because of their relationship.
His mother rushed to the scene after getting word her son had been killed and identified him as 25-year-old Victor Pacheco, of Ontario.
Witnesses said they saw Pacheco riding a white bicycle being chased by a blue truck earlier in the night. The next time anyone saw him, he was lying in a vacant lot, beaten to death.
"We are processing the crime scene, there is some evidence that we believe is going to generate possibly some forensic evidence," Detective Quilmes Rodriguez said, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "We believe that weapons are at the scene."
It was unclear what weapons Rodriguez spoke about, but witnesses said several bricks were found near Pacheco's body.
Authorities said his death may have been the result of a personal dispute. Pacheco's beating was so brutal, investigators suspected there may have been more than one attacker.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Random attacks against bicyclists in Minneapolis are prompting warnings Sunday from police.
Two people were hit on Friday in separate incidents, including 20-year-old Mackenzie Jensen of south Minneapolis.
Mackenzie never saw what hit him, but a witness said it was a vicious attack.
Mackenzie has a fractured jaw after someone threw a chunk of concrete at his face from a passing vehicle. He was biking on a quiet south Minneapolis block of 41st Street when officers say he was attacked out of the blue. A woman was also hit was in the same area.
The female victim was grazed with the chunk of cinder block, but Jensen is in rough shape.
In a bike community like this, his story and his photos may come as particularly unsettling.
Between Aldrich and Bryant – on 41st Street – it’s the path most traveled for Jensen. His mom Kristin Jensesn tells WCCO, “There was never a time he didn’t want to be on his bike.”
As her little boy became a man, he kept the hobby by commuting this path to work. He was on his way in on Friday.
“About the size of a brick is what had hit his face,” Kristin said. “[It] came flying at him out of nowhere and just cracked him in the face.”
Witnesses say a man driving a white Bronco and wearing a glove, his hands protected from the rough cement, was hurling a concrete chunk at Mackenzie.
John Elder says Minneapolis Police are looking into it.
“It’s so blatantly aggressive and so unprovoked. There’s nothing to lead to believe that that bicyclist had done anything to this individual because it was a pattern of behavior on this person’s part,” Elder said.
Officers say they have a list of similar reports from around south Minneapolis, Mackenzie was hurt the worst.
“How could somebody do this to another human being? How could they live with themselves,” Kristin said.
Kristin can’t wrap her mind around the senseless and random act of violence her son couldn’t have seen coming.
“You can’t take that pain away of knowing that he’s going to be damaged. He’s gonna be, not the same anymore,” she said.
Mackenzie’s jaw is wired shut and face shattered. He’ll need two permanent plates near his cheeks. All because of a stranger who cut his ride short.
“Here comes somebody that thought it would be a just a great idea to injure my child and for no reason. I think the no reason part and feeling so helpless is the part that gets me, every time, every time,” Kristin said.
Kristin said she is also worried about the rest of the south Minneapolis community.
“So worried about the community and the city of Minneapolis,” Kristinsaid. “Is he going to strike again?”
Minneapolis consistently ranks among the country’s top bicycle-friendly cities. Elder says he’s seen bikers and drivers become frustrated and break the rules of the shared roadways, but he’s never seen anything like this incident.
“There’s been some very small amount of rivalry over the years between bicyclists and motor vehicles,” Elder said.
It’s hard to know the exact motivation of the driver until he is found, something that only adds to this mother’s anger.
A GoFundMe page has been set up for Jensen. To donate, click here.
The car is described as a white or cream Ford Bronco with a possible window broken toward or on the back with a piece of wood tacked up on it. Officers say you can call Crimestoppers or Minneapolis Police if you have tips.
They are also reviewing any surveillance tapes in the area to try to get a license plate number.

SAN DIEGO — California Highway Patrol officers are looking for the driver of a white GMC pickup who struck and killed a bicyclist on northbound Interstate 15 near Rancho Bernardo Monday morning and didn't stop.
A motorist called 911 to report that a man was riding a bicycle in the slow lane of the freeway south of West Bernardo Drive/Pomerado Road around 4:25 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Tommy Doerr.
Officers were sent to the area, but before they arrived – about 14 minutes later – the CHP received another call saying the rider had been hit while in the No. 2 lane, CHP Officer Tony Contreras said.
The fatal accident shut down traffic for hours on the freeway, creating a huge backup.
For a while, all northbound traffic was being diverted to the carpool lanes of the freeway while cars that were already on I-15 were taken off the freeway at Rancho Bernardo Road.
The CHP slowly reopened lanes and by 8:23 a.m., all lanes were open and the traffic alert was cancelled.
Contreras said a witness told investigators a white pickup was the first vehicle to hit the bicyclist. That vehicle likely has moderate front-end damage as a result of the collision, he said.
"We don't know how many times the body was ran over or struck," Contreras said.
He said no identification was found on the man.
It is illegal to ride a bicycle on freeway lanes, although there is a stretch of the I-15 north of Lake Hodges where bicycles are allowed on the right shoulder.

Well it's The fingers's thread, I reckon he's using it as intended.

When I see it pop up, I think, "i wonder who got killed in Southern California yesterday?"

I just think that this is a net negative for bicyclists here.

What about all the 99.9% of bicycle experiences that are positive? :)
