Charleston SC, I was told my a DOT official they not only do not design roads for bicycles they intertidally try to discourage them. He said bicycles do not pay fuel taxes. That was twenty five years ago but that was when the big growth was happening and the new roads were designed which haven't changed. It is extremely dangerous to ride a bike in Charleston SC and that is why there are very, very few cyclist. The ebike has been wonderful because one can make a mile+ detour to avoid the main roads when commuting. Charleston is far behind most other places I visit.

Utah is similar. Bike lanes appear and disappear. Curbs appear and disappear. My answer is the ebike that goes motorcycle speeds in car lanes ( for my safety + harmony on the road ) and bike speeds in bike lanes ( for actual bicycling ).

"Hope you enjoyed your 0.5 mile bicycle lane, now go home" is what that says to me.
