I am working out a right side dual drive to a nexus 3 speed hub (or some other 3 speed hub) and I have not seen it so I thought I would ask.

Can I use a 3 speed front derailleur trigger shifter to change gears on the nexus 3 speed?
Like this one.

Or is there some other 3 speed that has a 19 tooth sprocket that works with the GGoodrum adapter that is a left side trigger shifter?
I want the shifter to be on the left handle bar.

I am also needing to purchase a rim and spokes for 135mm 20" BMX rim... Damn project taking too long :)
I keep explaining to people next time you see me you won't get to ask any questions :)

Thanks everyone, Can't wait to get the motor mounted and the new rear wheel now that I have finally chose a direction.

I only have nexus 4 and 7 speeds in the garage, so not lots of help tonite.

The odds of a 3 chainring front derailer shifter having exactly the correct amount of cable pull for a nexus 3 speed hub is pretty small. If it were me, I would consider some of the following:

Check to see if your nexus 3 speed ignores "overshifting", that is- as long as you have given at least as much cable travel needed, then the internal hub ignores the excess cable pull; so if you are centered on #2 rear gear, then as long as your cable goes at least the desired amount, it shifts to 1 or 3 depending on cable travel direction.

getting the nexus shifter with a gear number inside the shifter, pop the cover and make a new label with inverted numbers. install shifter on the left upside down. true you rotate a different way, but your left hand will learn.

use your front derailer shifter idea with a micro adjust clicking shifter, then put some indicator on it that corresponds to your nexus hub.

modify a "travel agent" brake adapter to give the right amount of cable travel with your shifter?

Do you know the cable travel on a nexus 3 speed?

OK well I suppose I will just get a nexus and find out :) I don't know the length of the shift and I also don't know if it is forgiving...

I will post back here when I find out.

Thanks for the ideas I will be doing one of the things you mentioned if I can't do the trigger shifter.

the index positions are wrong. so if it is an indexing shifter it will not work properly. you could use one that was friction only.

but the 3 speed shifters are not that expensive.

I bought that same 20" wheel-mounted S-A 3-speed hub. At $49, it was cheaper than I could find the Nexus-3 hub by itself. It is still going strong on my 20" Port Runner, with the 3220 setup:

The wheel/hub came with the standard twist-click shifter, which I mounted on the left.
