Have you considered modifying volitions controller so that it is thermally monitored. What was the performance like, How long did it last before it failed? Interesting that the controller failed, not the windings, are you thinking of running more power? (extra thoughts, you mentioned a 64...

If you want some cheapies, can run sensored or sensorless, has 50 volt capacitor, I have used at 12s a lot.( you would need to monitor low voltage.) They are small and handy to have as a backup as well...

Have had similar problem, Self learn several times but still wants to only run in reverse.

Was it the same throttle used for each controller? (I have a throttle that ramps up quicker than others, making it seem twitchy)
