    Crystalyte HS3540, Loose magnets

Well, after three years, I've had my first motor problem. All the magnets have come loose and will have to be re epoxied back in. Never ran the motor over 100deg centigrade. System is 80v at 40a.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus 47-406 slippery when wet

This tire is mounted on a 406 rim. We're probably talking about apples and oranges when comparing circumference. Anyway, lowering the pressure did absolutely no good at all. It's not lightly loaded since I'm sitting about 16" away from the wheel not to mention it's total weight being around 16...

Schwalbe Marathon Plus 47-406 slippery when wet

You are correct in your assumption. I use this tire on the rear of my Velo. This tire doesn't like being wet and will lose grip easily, especially if too much torque is applied.

A high end Pinarello Dogma F8 road bike will set you back $15g. High end Velomoibiles are cheaper than that.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus 47-406 slippery when wet

Thanks Chalo, I don't buy into the DIY tubeless option either. Maybe if I were riding Dutch roads and not these Italian minefields that pass for roads, I might give it a try. Oh, and kudos to Justin for all his help and support. He's the best around!

Schwalbe Marathon Plus 47-406 slippery when wet

Can't risk possible pinching. Roads are very bad and it's a bitch removing the wheel.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus 47-406 slippery when wet

Don't think it carries less weight, probably more. The tire is mounted on an Exal heavy duty 36 spoke rim with a Crystalite HS3540 hub. The whole wheel weighs in at around 8.5kg. I'm sitting about 80cm away with 12kg worth of batteries at my side. Whether climbing or descending, I still slip. If...

Schwalbe Marathon Plus 47-406 slippery when wet

Am wondering if anyone else has used this tire on the rear of a velomobile or recumbent? It's inflated to 5 bar which I understand is the max pressure. So far, I've only experienced slippage on damp roads due to fog. Haven't tested in the rain yet. If I accelerate abruptly, the tire will lose...

    Hubmotor spokes loosening

If you're not going into business but just want to DIY, pick up the proper size die from a tool shop. Sorry, don't know the exact sizes. Try http://www.sheldonbrown.com/

    Hubmotor spokes loosening

Update: After retightening the spokes and dropping superglue down the nipples, they seem to be retaining their tension. When building a new wheel such as this, suggest checking the spokes after a few rides. Could have been just the wheel settling in that loosened them.

    Hubmotor spokes loosening

I used anti-seize but with this wheel, am not sure that was a good idea. After retightening the spokes and truing the wheel, I went around and dropped superglue into all the nipples. I hope that helps.

    Hubmotor spokes loosening

Hmm, I'm using 12 gauge with my HS3540. The Exal rims came from Crystalyte. I must say the rims were not to be liking. Although they appear strong, their quality did not meet my expectations.

    Hubmotor spokes loosening

Thanks for all your replies. I am an experienced wheel builder but first time using a hubmotor. I forgot to mention that, because of the large size of the motor mounted onto a 20" rim, it was necessary to radially spoke the wheel. I believe the back and forth twisting motion due to acceleration...

    Hubmotor spokes loosening

Warning! If you have a powerful hubmotor and have regen enabled, be sure to occasionally check your spoke tension. Mine became loose to the extent that almost all of them were completely slacked.

You must have nice roads to descend at 80 km... I envy you. It's rather hilly where I live and the roads are very bad. If I were to descend at that speed, I would most certainly die. I recommend direct drive hub motors for three main reasons: Regen capability, quietness and no added wear and...

Different strokes for different folks I say. Being an avid road rider for 30 years, I've spent thousands of dollars on high end road bikes. My carbon fiber Velomobile wasn't all that much more than my Bianchi/Campy superleggere 928 nanotech. The hybrid mod on my Evo-R raised its price to around...

Grinfineon C7240-NC sensored / sensorless problem

Yes, you are absolutely correct. Although I fail to understand why it's necessary to repeat the procedure every time the controller is turned off. Anyway, it's still a nuisance for me. Should have an eprom or cmos to remember settings or configure using the CA3.

Grinfineon C7240-NC sensored / sensorless problem

It's every time for me. The wires are not easily accessible in my Velomobile so it's becoming quite a nuisance. If you roll backward down a hill in sensorless mode and open the throttle, the motor will stutter and won't catch. In my case sensored is an absolute must.

Grinfineon C7240-NC sensored / sensorless problem

Changed the default sensorless mode to sensored mode. Results were checked and verified. However, after switching off and back on again, the settings were lost reverting back to sensorless. Anyone have a clue how to fix? Thanks.

Grinfineon C7240-NC sensored / sensorless problem

Followed the procedure to set hall mapping to sensored mode as described at ebikes.ca. The setting was successful and the controller functioned normally. However, after cutting the power to the controller and turning it back on, the controller reverted back to the default sensorless mode. HELP!

Nice but a bit scary to me. How are you controlling the two motors?

Direct drive hubs are best for Velos. Geared hubs do not have regen capability.

Extreme pedaling resistance with power off.

The mystery has been solved. My relay circuit shorts the controller power leads when the system is turned off. This also shorts the motor phase wires causing the resistance.

Cool retro vehicle but needs upgrading. Perhaps you could disassemble the panels and use them to create molds for carbon fiber fab?
