BBS02 no power, water inside controller. Is it salvageable?

Before christmas last year my BBS02 suddenly stopped working. Battery shorted out once connected to the motor (seen by the LED indicator which would not light up when connected to the motor), and no power was given to the unit.

When removing and inspecting the unit, the first thing I noticed is that the seal around the top side of the controller casing was not complete, and that drops of water would seep out of the unit when flipped upside down. My guess is that water splashing from the front wheel has gotten into the casing.

Because the unit is still under warranty I did not open it until PSWPower asked me to do so. Today they asked me to send the potentially broken controller to China and pay for the shipping costs as well, which would cost approximately the same as just buying a new one.

I was therefore wondering if there is any chance to salvage the existing controller? I'm not seeing any obvious damage (I'm assuming the white powder is just aluminium oxide), but then again I'm not sure how to look for it. I have a multimeter and soldering tools at my disposal.

If not, does anyone have experience with the pswpower warranty? It seems overkill to ship it all the way back to China just for them to see that it is, in fact, water damaged?

Cheers
