Normally, this is Lock's realm but anyway for those who want to fully understand the background see below.

Could you please sign this petition to transform Dublin City Centre into a cycling and pedestrian friendly space?

We need this as Ireland is far from bike-friendly and this will make Dublin one of the most attractive places to live in Europe. If it does go ahead it will help pave the way for other cities to follow the Dutch and Danish models and help make urban environments safer for people.

Here is the petition:

If you can at all please give a reason as why you think this is important for Dublin.

Some possible reasons:

  • Increased safety for cyclists and pedestrians
    Decreased fumes and noise pollution
Boon to businesses citing examples of cities in the Netherlands and Denmark
    Increase in tourism
Places Dublin as a world city
    Advertises Dublin
    Increase social utility
    Increased property value
    Decreased cost of healthcare

Background:

In June of this year, Dublin City Council put forward a plan, or more precisely three plans for the city centre. Three different proposals were put out for public consultation. Two of the three plans involved mixing bicycles with cars and having painted bicycle lanes. One option completely segregated cars from cyclists. That was the option that the majority of people wanted.

Here is the chosen option in detail:

Now the councillors, or more specifically vested interests didn't like this option, and got the local representatives to re-examine the people's choice.

Now we have the vested interests harping on about their businesses. As if the majority of people visit their shops by car - most people in Dublin City Centre don't have a car and they certainly can't park anywhere close to these shops. Most people walk, cycle, take the LUAS tram, a bus, train or taxi to get around Dublin City Centre.

Like most cities driving is actually a hindrance to mobility. Large urban areas in the Netherlands and Denmark have shown that if you pedestrianise city centres and make them bicycle-friendly then more people will shop there. And this has been replicated over and over again in cities in those countries. Dublin will not be any different.

Below is typical of the vested interests of short sighted idiots whose premises should be boycotted:

This too is a good example but of a different city, Waterford. It is especially annoying when shoddy journalism allows these people to spout their nonsense unchecked.

Please sign the petition and if you can at all give a reason for signing it.

Thank you. Oh and for the record, I'm not from Dublin but I do visit it frequently and I know that it if it is successful there it will eventually be rolled out nationwide in cities and large towns.

Thanks to everyone who signed the petition.

Last time I checked we were around 1,500 signatures.

If you haven't done so already I urge you to sign. We're up against some powerful vested interests - including one city councillor who is embedded with oil companies.

Thanks everyone.
