It's my understanding that virtually all modern rims are crotched, and the tire is on its way back to the seller. Now I'm focusing on WHICH different tire. I'm considering dismounting either the tire from the wheel coming off the bike, or the front one from the bike, and trying that.

I agree the tire to be returned, and another one mounted on the rim. First thing to do. For me it is strange that it is not solved already, because here such a problem would never last a day. If I couldn’t find a tire in the shop to fit, I’d re-lace the wheel and ride.
