The particles collect at the node points of the waveforms where the least motion is.

This is part of standard High School physics curriculum right? You measure the base resonate freq of the piece of black paper with some sugar sprinkled on it sitting on top of a little speaker, then calculate out what other freq's (harmonics of the base resonate) will create patterns, and use some crude math to try to predict the shapes it will take.
