just browsing and bumped into the "Vert event" site which seems to be a big European retailer of Ebikes...
http://www.vert-event-angers.fr/vtt-electrique/712-full-e1-8717611783520.html
Basicly, i was stunned by the huge range of Commercial Ebikes from all the big manufacturers. ( RH side listings on that site)
apart from old fav's liike A2B, there are,..Focus, Giant, Gitanes, Peogeot, Solex, Kalkhoff, Stromer, etc etc
Giant , for instance lists 20+ different models of Ebike,. townies, MTBs, tourers, Folders, hub motors, mid motors, various battery options , etc etc
Peugeot are similar with hubs as well as Bosch mid drives ( various power levels)
I am simply amazed at the rate of development in this market !

E bikes have totally reached critical mass in Europe. As boomers there get old, they turn to assist. Since they ride more there in the first place, it's happening faster there.

Gasoline in the EU remains much more expensive than in North America, and that has to play a role in the culture and decision-making there...

(Edit: random fuel price chart from the Internet deleted, it was old and out of date)

Spinner, I don't know where your table came from, but they certainly messed up the Australian gas price for one...
Even at $1.50 litre ( but very changeable and currently $1.20), the USA equivalent price would be under US$4.50 gal.
Diesel is very similar, usually under US$5.00 /gal
I'm not convinced its fuel prices that is pushing the move to Ebikes, driving a car in most European cities ( and Australia !), has become a freekin nightmare, with congestion charges and parking almost impossible at any cost.
Someone recently bought a parking space in Sydney for $240,000 !
I really do believe its convenience , together with the increased availability, that is behind this move to Ebikes.

Just my facts....
Actually I'm in Germany (Berlin) and gasoline in my neighborhoods is priced from 1.3 (95oct with 10% of bioethanol) and 1.4 (102 oct ultimate unleaded), Diesel could be found even at 1.15 - 1.2 somewhere.
In Italy (Florence) Gasoline is Around 1.5 (all euro prices) for a 95 oct.

In Italy and Germany You can use LPG or Natural Methane Gas cars due to the high number of Stations.

For Instance I can Drive from Florence (Italy) to Berlin Via Österreich with my small OPEL Corsa 1,2L with 70 Euros of methane without a single liter of gasoline. (1400Km).

Italy is one of the countries that sells more bicycles in europe and with a great tradition, but In Germany, even with the unfavorable weather conditions compared to Italy, a lot more bicycles and e-bikes are actually circulating. Culture, policies and Infrastructures are the main reasons for that, sure not the weather nor the flats/hills questions. Italy is a mountain country and Germany is mostly Flat.

Here In germany there are lot of people using muscular bikes not even owning a car....but (it is an idea not supported by true statistics datas) I think that most E-bikers owns at least also a gasoline Car.

In Florence Center town a car rental company (CTG to be clear) is allowed to circulate with petrol cars even if the town is equipped with more than hundred free electric charging points (each one with at least 4 points and reserved parkings) and the center is mostly forbidden to any car if not residential ones. In Freiburg im Breisgau where there is a 20 years old green administration the same company is allowed to use only electric cars......
Things are more complicated and less rational than expected....well, all is more rational if you analyze everything from the right (very few) pockets perspective....

Well, the topic is for new things at Eurobike 2015 :) Presumably, they'll have a display bike there.. Anyway, it's just a development from an existing line: https://www.mandofootloose.com/en/index.jsp

This is so cool if they could offer power outlets for Ebikes that would be awesome Australia really needs to think like this especially in sydney cbd.
