I want to make a homemade mid drive bike, but I can't find much information on how to go about this. I've done various searches with Google, but the sheer amount of pages where people are just bolting on a hub motor just gets in the way.

What I want to do is buy a generic full suspension bike and mount http://www.monsterscooterparts.com/24-volt-750-watt-motor-ezip-750.html this motor in front of the front sprocket.

It's a brushed motor, so doesn't need a controller, so I'm just going to have an on/off switch, maybe a 3 position switch, for off, 1/2 power and full power.

It seems like people put a sprocket on the left side of their front sprocket and drive that with their motors for gear reduction purposes.
Since my mountain bike will have 2 or maybe 3 front sprockets, I was just going to use on of those, but I was wondering if there was a reason that people did it the way they did?
The only reasons I can think of is for allowing them to use all of the gears on their bike, which I wouldn't bother with, since me, plus my motor should be putting out a good amount of power, or maybe they use a free wheeling sprocket over the other side. Apparently you can can get free wheeling attachments for pedals, so I don't know about that.

The motor I'm looking at is a 24v, 750w motor, so I only need 2 12volt batteries, I only have a 10k/6.25 mile drive to work and I should be allowed to charge it there, so I don't need a long range.
Nothing's ordered at this stage, so I might look for a 36v, 1000w motor, I found one like that, but it was too long to fit in between the pedals of the mountain bike I was looking at.

I'm planning on doing this very cheaply, I have a mig welder and various tools, etc, it would be so much easier for me to simply buy a 1000w hub motor, but I'm going to build this to save money on driving to work, so it would defeat the purpose to spend lots of money to save money.

I think I should be able to figure this all out myself, since it's going to be a cheap mod, but I'd really like to see how other people did this and the reasons for why they did what they did.

You might want to read up on the many ways to go about it here in the Non-Hub drive section:

;)

Lots of info and reasons there.

My early CrazyBike2 thread has some info, as does my old http://electricle.blogspot.com blog (though the latter is not organized except chronologically, it has everything about why I made each choice).

Don't waste yout time doing it yourself. Get a GNGebike kit for $400 including delivery, which takes about two hours to install, and then let the fun begin. You'll need a battery that can give at least 22 amps continuous, so total cost about $800.

The CNG kit is a nice setup, even I'm following it. Undecided on how I want DH build to be. I'm definitly going mid drive, but unsure if I will choose the hub motor approach. As for your current design, if you have the resources and skill, the brushed setup was my cheapest build to date. http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=11542. It worked very well. I lost interest in it, since it could not compete with my other bikes. No suspension and an uncomfortable riding position. The drive train itself was reliable at the low power levels. I already had too many bikes so the bike got shelved once I had a better ebike for a spare.

Thanks for the replies.

After a lot of thought, I've just decided to go with a kit, the 1200w kit here: http://www.ebkit.com/1ck.htm for $399.
It's more than I wanted to spend, but it'll have everything I need, except batteries and it'll just work, no messing around required, worth the extra $150 or so.

The cyclone was my fist kit, mounting brackets are crap. The freewheel will need to be upgraded eventually. Motor and controller are still running fine. I ended up redoing the motor mount. http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=6348

i have the 1200w cyclone with a Nuvinci hub..50v,20amp lipo,48v,40amp Lyen controller... you can get a Nuvinci 360 in 26" wheel[or 20"] from cyclone motors Taiwan for $319.00.. i bought my 1200w from them with isis crank and 3 chainring an extra freewheel, spring chain tensioner and heat sinks for $400.00 shipped.. no controller..see ES index e bikes general, topic, wood bike with motor...good clear pics of install
