Hi from New Zealand!
Finally finished my eBike build! I use it every day for commuting, most of the time towing one or two children (30 to 50kg total) in the trailer. The details:
- 48v 750w bafang 8fun mid-drive (BBS02)
- 20ah aluminium case rack mount battery
- 48T chain wheel
- c963 display
- Pedal assist and thumb throttle
- Schwinn Brighton, 8spd internal hub
- custom polycarbonate shield over trailer
- custom leather/canvas panniers
I live in a fairly flat city, but it gets really windy, and we have a bit of rain. I've also made a curved windshield for the bike that covers me completely, but it needs more testing in gusty winds before I am happy with it. Most of my commute is along a river pathway (as in the photo) that does not allow cars.
50km/h top without the trailer (actually faster but I slowed down because it felt too dangerous). With the trailer, 30km/h seems about safe on the smoothest parts of the commute. My commute is only around 7km each way. So far charging overnight once per week is about all I need, sometimes twice.
Compared to another vehicle I have with a rear hub motor, this thing has more potential because it uses the rear gears, but it is much more difficult to ride and get used to. The pedal assist is not based on torque (which would be a lot better), with this mid-drive it just slams in and tries to get you to a preset speed as fast is it can, so you need to ride a bit to get used to it!
