hi all.

does anyone here know if a cartridge style BB can be converted to run an external bearing type BB ?

the reason im asking, is i want to run the Patterson crankset ,and it requires n external bearing type BB.

the Patterson crankset is similar to the Schlumpf speed drive, but less than half the price.

Hi Jason,

Looks like it's designed to fit to a standard BB:

External bearings are in cups which screw into the standard 1.37" dia. shell.

thanks for the info.

good news indeed. i want my bike to be completely free of derailleurs !

thanks again.

just looked through the install instructions.
it seems i wont be able to use it after all ! it requires downtube cable routing.
my bike has the cables along the top tube.

anyone know of other alternatives out there (apart from the speed drive)

Jason

uhh, hammerschmidt?
let me guess, no iscg tabs, right?

Unlike Truvativ's somewhat similar HammerSchmidt system, the Metropolis crank will install on any standard frame with a fixed chain stay – no ISCG tabs are required – though as of right now it does require down tube cable routing.

i can't see how cable routing would be an insurmountable problem.
let me guess, no down tube??
still, relocating cable should be about the simplest mod one can do.
but i suppose would have to see it to understand.

schlumpf is still the king when it comes to range.
2.5 to 1 rather than the 1.6 of the others in case you weren't fully aware.
i'd have one right now if only schlumpf were cable actuated.
unable to decide which one i want/need more, higher range or cable convenience.
it's always the way, never a clear front runner that does i all.

i wonder if the 2.5 ratio would tend to break shifting under load so mr. schlumpf deliberately makes you shift with your heel.
it forces you to momentarily stop pedaling which is what i'd like to avoid or at least minimize by using a regular shift lever.

The hamerschmidt won't fit either !

Looks like I'm up to saving for the schlumpf.
Id be buying the 1.6:1 version of the speed drive
Not the 2.5:1 version.

I just wish the speed drive was cable actuated too.

thanks for the link.

i did look at the patterson, but it requires the cabling to run along the down tube.
my cable path runs along the seat tube, so the frame isn't compatible with the patterson.

so far im living with the front derailleur.
i have adjusted it so that i cant select the highest ring. im running a chain tensioner on the rear instead of the derailleur too.
the tensioner can only accommodate 10 teeth from biggest to smallest rings. mine is 28 , 38 , 48 on the front.
so i have the 28 and the 38T rings available.

it has worked well with the alfine 11 spd hub so far.i would still like the schlumph, but it's not in the budget right now.

considering the recommended set-up for the alfine, the 28/38 is just about spot on.

shimano recommends no more than 1.9x the size of the rear cog.
because im running an 18T on the rear, im a little over the 34T max recommended, but i hardly ever use the 38T
ring on the front, and when i do, im usually not putting that much torque through it anyway, so i think ill be ok.
