I'm interested in a schlumpf drive, or one of the cheaper clones.
Does any odd have any experience with them?

Just now my ebike has a 52 tooth single speed crank on the front as I don't want extra shifters and deraillers when I am in top gear most of the time, I.e. I think 52 tooth on front and bottom chainwheel at the back (not counted it but should be 11/13 tooth,

What schlumpf drive will give me the possibility to input some watts from pedal power at 25/30mph?

I want to run a single speed gear on the back of my next build and a schlumpf on the front.

Will I still be able to pedal the bicycle if not under power or will I be stuck in a really high gear?

Where can I get my hands on the clones?

I've been wondering the same thing.

I'm thinking of getting a cromotor and they can only handle a single gear freewheel. I think the smallest is 14t.

Would a Schlumph hi-speed drive with a small front gear do me any good? I also am looking to pedal at 30 mph but still be able to pedal if/when the electrics go south.

Anybody have the answer to this?

Planetary geared cranks multiply by 1.6 and up to 2.5, depends of the model that you buy.
With the Shlumpf HS drive, a 27 chainring in low, works out to 67.5 in high
Do the math

I completed my ATS Speed Drive (Schlumpf clone, 1:1.6 ratio) installation about a month ago. With about 200 miles pedal-only on this bike, I can say I love the thing and have no regrets.

I have a bunch of info about the build here (http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37269), I cataloged a lot of lessons one should consider when buying/installing a Schlumpf or ATS drive.

I also purchased/installed a Schlumpf High Speed Drive (1:2.5) ratio in my not-yet-rideable bike, once I get it on the road I'll be posting a review.

Cheers Matty, il have a read now, where did you purchase it?

I bought from ES user Accountant. Good price, excellent packaging, very fast delivery considering it came from across the pond.

I bought an extra from Accountant, that I'm now selling. See here fo rthe details: http://www.endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=40313

I see that the Stealth a fighter has a 14 tooth single speed rear freewheel and a schlumpf with 38 tooth chain ring on the front, I think I might copy that arrangement, Anybody with a similar setup?

Correct me if I'm wrong but only the real Shlumpf High Speed Drive has the 1:2.5 ratio right?
All other Schlumpf clones (including Hammerschmit) are only 1:1.6 ratio correct?
I was interrested in the Hammerschmit because it has a shift lever and cable to mount on the handle bars whereas the Schlumpf only has the shift button at the center of the crank. Too bad it doesn't have the higher gear ratio as the Schlumpf.

+1

I missed out on your Matty so I've had to order one from Accountant, i hope it arrives fast to me in the uk as i am thinking of installing it to measure how much clearance i need before customising my frame similar to Timmas Intense build. i just have to make sure the chain wheel and Speed drive itself doest hi the frame, how far does the schlumpf sit out from edge of your bottom bracket? Also i looked at the official schlumpf site and it didn't list the dealers that can fit the drive in the UK, any ideas?

I have a stealth fighter with that setup (after playing with others) and it's great. I'm not sure you can get 14t single speed freewheels too readily, normally 16t is the smallest you can get. On the fighters they use a larger multispeed cluster with all the other gears removed. This is good for maintaining the chain line too. Even with a 16t single speed you get a much bigger benefit with the 1.6x ratio. The fighter has to use a 38t max chainwheel due to the width of the frame but with a normal converted bicycle you can run a moderate sized 42t or something like that and still get the equivalent of a 67t chainwheel which is huge.

The drive is now supported by Haberstock Mobility. In the lower right corner of their www page is a "contact" link. I asked them via e-mail for their installers in US states MA, CT and RI, and they ended up sending me the whole USA. Nice. Except the data contained a lot of false positives... Lots of places that were either out of business or no longer employed "that guy who knew how to install the drive".

I can take some pix & measures tomorrow. But for now...

This is where the 0.5mm, 2mm, 4mm & 6mm spacers come in (sold separately). That 45 degree knurled surface mates with the 45 deg chamfer you machine into the bottom bracket, so that part is just inside the BB. Here you see the original cone (0mm spacer) and the 2mm next to it. I ended up using the 2mm, and that's how far away from the BB the large part of the drive sits. With a BCD of 110mm, I'd say that the large part of the drive is about 100mm diameter.

Thanks for tips Hyena, anything above 60 tooth is going to be pretty useful for me do that's great.

Matty I think il end up installing it myself if I don't find any dealers but there is a couple of recumbent specialist near me and those drives are popular so might be able to do it. I think I will be able to chamfer the BB housing and just sit the drive in place to check how much space I have away from the frame before I modify the frame. Il just have to be patient until it arrives. U did a good guide for installation so that will help :)

So my Schlumpf arrived from accountant, couple of problems right out the box though, i notice that two of the lips with the holes for the chainring are bent, i read someone else on the forum also had this problem, is it easy to straighten this or will the lip snap?

also i took a video, is it normal for the drive to feel like it has resistance, i thought if i spun it with my hand that it would practically freewheel around and it feels like there is resistance when i spin it, anybody else found this with these drives?

I bought 3 ATS drives from Accountant, all wrapped impeccably and arrived undamaged. By all accounts they were identical. I ended up installing and riding on two - both felt the same. In 1:1 drive it's silky smooth, like any quality BB. In 1:1.6 overdrive, it has some resistance and "feels lumpy" as the planetary gears are engaged.

I think if you rotate a standard BB By hand, uninstalled, it'll feel stiffer than you expect. Put a crank on it and install it In a frame , the same BB feels silky smooth

Cheers Matt, I guess it is engaged in high gear just now, il need to think about how I'm going to get these lugs straight, I do have very large vice I could possible clamp it in to get it straight, il wait and see what accountant recommends to get it straight when he emails me back, fingers crossed it will work out alright

Accountant has a good reputation and I actually cant believe how quick it came from Croatia to the uk

My severely bent lug was straightened by the bike shop experts. They used various combinations of pliers and crescent wrenches and so on to straighten the ear. These ears are made from punched steel, so they are pretty easy to straighten. The hole was not quite round so some filing was required to get the bolts to fit.

Mine also didn't spin, there are some big sealed bearings in there and not much mass on the periphery so they don't spin, but pushing the pedals with your fingers there is very little resistance to pedaling.

I don't notice any lumpiness in the 1.6:1 mode, but perhaps I'm just not sensitive to a subtle effect. It feels pretty smooth in both gears on mine.

Thanks Alan,
If the lugs are steel then maybe it won't be so bad to straighten them, just a pita when I want to get round to installing, thanks again for swift reply

How to fix a bent lug on ATS Speed Drive:
1. cover lug with tape to prevent scratches or wear to the painted finish
2. Clamp in a vice
3. Allow the clamping action to straighten the lug up
4. use your hand to finely adjust to perfectly straight
5. Fixed Drive

It was accountant that gave me the confidence by saying he would send another drive whether I wanted to attempt to repair it or not. It's fixed now but user fast communication from accountant and great service.
