Solved! Can wrong hall/phase combo make motor spin faster?

I know the title sounds lame but it got you to read the thread! :D I am connecting a Lyen 12 Fet to a Magic Pie II. I thought I had the right phase and hall combinations as they are documented on Lyen's site and they do make the motor spin. However, I noticed a vibration and grinding noise typical of a phase combination. I also noticed one one test ride that under heavy load the controller cuts out. It pulled 40 amps on that ride.

The issue is only at a certain RPM, maybe 20% of max. At very slow RPM it is reasonably smooth except for the slight clunkiness common at really low RPM. At high speeds with no load the motor sounds great.

I decided that maybe I had miswired something when I added the wires through the axle and maybe the color code I thought I had was not exactly right at the motor. So without changing hall connections I tired all 6 phase combos. I found two combos that spun it forward and had the same issue as described above. I found one combination that spun it backwards very smoothly, but this combination had maybe half the torque and half the max RPM of the others.

I did a lot of reading here including these super handy references on how to sort out your combinations:

After all of the reading it sounds like a phase/hall combo issue will give you either "spins the wrong way" or "barely works". I didn't come across anything mentioning smooth operation at half torque and half speed or smooth at most RPMs but unhappy at one particular RPM.

Can any of you gurus shed some light on this? Am I barking up the wrong tree with the hall/phase thing? Should I maybe look at controller settings instead? If so, which wiring combo should I go with? The smooth and slow one or the fast but unsmooth at one RPM combo.

You guys have been a ton of help already so thanks in advance for any ideas.

Happy times! The problem is fixed. Upon further messing around I boke the +5V wire to the halls. I am thinking it was almost broken when I got the results I mentioned before. I solder it back up and the thing runs like a champ with the normal wiring from Lyen's site. Hope I didn't waste your time!

hi
could you please post your phase and hall connection diagram? i also have a mp2 and lyen 12 controller but it is not working. see http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=43454
thanks
