Recently I added power assist to our mountain bike to help with hill climbing and when running errands.
I ordered a 24V P2-A geared hub motor, controller, and thumb throttle from Island Earth in Australia and a single 24V 8AH NiCd battery from ebikes.ca.
This design provides a nice assist when going up hills. You still need to pedal to help out the motor when going up hills, but it provides a nice level of assist to help you out.
Top speed with this approach is around 15 mph with an unassisted range of over 10 miles.
