Hey E-S

I am building an electric bike soon. I have decided that Headway LiFePO4 cells are going to be the best choice for me because they are safer than Lipos. I really want to have a battery management system but I don't know which one I should use. I have been lurking for quite a while and have seen this brand used in at least one thread, and one of their units seems to suite my needs:

http://www.bestechpower.com/64v20spcmbmspcbforlifepo4batterypack/PCB-D166.html

I don't know what I'm doing and even though the BMS above seems like it will meet my needs I don't really know. And also besides some vague instructions on the forums I can't find any documentation on how exactly I need to wire/use this BMS module.

If anyone can tell me:
A) If the BMS above is a good solution for keeping each cell in a 20s2p headway pack balanced and safe from overcharge/discharge
B) What a better BMS module might be
C) where to go to learn how to wire and use these BMS modules properly
It would really help me. Thanks.

to know if this bms suits your needs we first would need to know your power demands. i don't know what headways can deliver. but if you're talking about 38120S those are 10Ah and 3c, so good for 30A which would perfectly fit to the bms chosen (40A cont).
this is a wikipedia link for bms: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battery_management_system
here is a link to a thread about bms for beginners:
http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=607434#p607434
maybe this helps to understand how to basicly install a bms:

and of course there is a manual included with the bestechpower
and here is a thread that show how to connect anything - it's the 24s one, but that doesn't make any difference (from a logic view)

hope this did help :)

For a BMS wiring diagram google in images 'bms wiring diagram', flick through till you find some of the pictures of actual BMS's with drawings overlaid. you'll find one very similar to your own i reckon.
very handy to keep referring to... they're not to hard once you've got the hang of it.
double check all your balancing wires before you connect it up or itll only last a few seconds!
ive had a few of the screws come loose on the headway cells after a few months of use so tighten them firmly.
the plastic connectors crack easily so push on evenly, and are a bitch to remove!!
use an insulated screwdriver or wrap the shaft in electrical tape so if you slip/miss/ loose attention you dont short something out
double/triple insulate any wires (incl balance wires) that have wear points or cross the opposite pole (keep this to a min if poss) cause life on a bike for a battery is tough and wearing off insulation is bad!
check frequently for the first few weeks to make sure everthing is sweet before relaxing a little
have fun!

Thanks for the feedback guise.
