Please don't proliferate misinformation. You're increasing your friend's risk of harm by recommending against cycling, because lack of exercise is much more dangerous to one's health than cycling.
Statistically, cycling is quite a bit safer than urban walking and much safer than motorcycling. I'm not sure that generalizations about bicycles extend to the rinky--dink motorcycles around here, but to the extent we ride like pedal cyclists, at pedal cyclist speeds, we're pretty darned safe. Actually pedaling helps safety too, by increasing blood flow and turning your brain on.
