1080P mini cams, alternatives to expensive GoPro

ne of the best (according to some sites I visited) is the SanDisk Extreme PLUS UHS-I 32GB (SDSDQX-032G-A46A - 32GB). you can find them for between $20 and $35 and it makes a world of difference in the video. I believe you want your card to be able to record up to 80mb/s

Thanks, that is really useful info!

Class 10 sd cards should handle the job. Also, theres no problem in buying the fake one, since you pay fake price and know its fake.

Just an FYI:

The SJ4000 is on sale starting june 8th for $66.00 for non wifi and $77.00 for wifi.

This is quite a bit off the usual price for the authentic SJ4000 so, just an fyi.

(hope the URL works)
Cool to know, just thinking the fakers are working so hard these days especially with this camera I think I would feel better paying the extra $23 for the Wifi version from the super master original web site.. (assuming sjcam.com is actually the super master original manufacture web site)
http://www.sjcam.com/home/27-sjcam-sj4000-wifi-1080p-full-hd-action-camera-sport-dvr.html
Willing to pay a bit more to be sure is a big thing for me I think cos normally I am a bit of a cheapass.

This ebay seller is the ebay seller that Technoman directly links to in his youtube test description notes, this seller also tries hard to talk about fakes with this pic etc.. http://www.ebay.com/itm/111453604414?rmvSB=true

Well, after seeing the Xiaomi Yi results, i'd buy it instead of sj4000. Main problem was that when i bought my sj, xiaomi was just launched so i wasnt sure about the quality. This video shows that xiaomi has a slightly better color balance than sj4000. The only problem on xiaomi is the lack of lcd. Although, i'm happy with my sj and i'll use it for a good time

What kind of tripod you used for fixing the cam on a bike?

Otherwise, I have this two SDXC card (SanDisk Extreme PLUS UHS-I 32GB & Transcend 32 GB High Speed Class 10 UHS TS32GSDHC10U1 85/45 MB/s). And I can say that Trancend is slightly faster and less expensive than the SanDisk card.
The video doesn't belongs to me, but i suppose he uses one bicycle mount on each cam

The Xiaomi Yi has good looking colors but no accessories at all, thus the price rises really fast after initial buy.

It must be compared to the SJ5000 wifi or SJ5000 plus instead, because of WiFi and Ambarela processor ; Xiaomi has Sony CMOS sensor while SJ5000 plus has Panasonic CMOS sensor. Xiaomi needs to go into txt settings to get the best of the camera, it has been limited by the manufacturer (see here bitrate recording). Once bitrate is raised to the real specs of the camera, you get beautiful results. The SJ5000 plus gets also better results about light/darkness and ambiant occlusion.

I know because I anted the Xiaomi Yi before choosing the SJ5000 plus  As when you add accessories to the Xiaomi you get into more known competitors like Sony AS-100, Garmin Elite Virb...

I got this little SportDV camera showed up last week:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1080P-Full-HD-DV-Waterproof-Mini-Sports-Camera-Bike-Helmet-Action-DVR-Video-Cam-/161557973940?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item259d9b0bb4

I've never had a cam (besides phone), so for $40(at the time)...I couldn't resist.

It uses a 4GB Class4+ microSD and records at 720p60fps and 1080p30fps in 3 minutes intervals.
It's definitely no gopro. Picture isn't much better than a phone, but very low profile and came with three mounting options...and I just saw the new session yesterday and thats what I'm saving for, but this at least gets me some action and will probably have a record of my death at some point.

Here is some sample footage:

720p@60fps

1080p@30fps

I bought a Mi/Xiaomi powerbank from Fasttech.com the other day and I noticed on the product box it has a scratchy genuine logo sticker on the box.
This brand of powerbank has been known to have fakes and I noticed prices on DX.com etc where dubiously cheaper which got me paranoid. So far when fasttech put "Authentic" at the start of the product name there being serious about that claim and so far for me that's always been true.

So I scratch away the numbers and go to their website and verify the code, during manufacture/packaging this number would be completely randomly generated and stored in a sql database at MI.com, sure enough it knows its a powerbank and the number has only ever been queried one time (by me)
http://www.mi.com/verify/

I think this is a great way to verify fakes and really should be adopted by all manufactures. It should never have ever even taken this long to get around to this type of verification method imo.
I want to see this on these sports cameras now since its just getting ridiculous.

Update to my post above about the mini SportsDV camera - after a firmware update, the 3-minute limit has been extended.

It'll do at least 15 min succession (I haven't tried longer yet, but heard it goes up to 50 min)

I bought the Xiaomi Sports Camera, I have rarely used it as I been more busy then normal.

Works like the video says..
I remember watching a bunch of youtube videos etc before I bought it.. I think maybe this one helped me decide?

I am thinking the SJ5000 with wifi. Would that be able to upload to wifi storage?
Be cool to see what the camera see's via my cell phone.
Be best to hardwire the SJ5000 to a bigger Ah battery.

I was tempted by the SJ5000 but I decided on the Xiaomi sports camera because there are no fakes.. There so many fakes of the SJ5000 that its just insane.

The reason there are so many fakes is because people are content with fakes. Such as with the fact that even a GENUINE SJ5000 is a fake. Oops.

Over Christmas there were commercials for the windshield mounted camera with the built in monitor, I wound up getting one for a relative who drives a truckload of equipment around in a big rig for work so he'll be treated like a long haul trucker in an accident, right? As far as he's concerned, that turns out to be the ultimate all around camera.

I have to admit, even as the socalled videopro, I could see the value of that thing if only 1080p. I might even settle for 720p. I'm going to warn you that as time goes on and TV's get better the poor quality of these things will become more and more obvious. The 480p cameras will probably disappear from the shelves overnight as people figure that out. Not just your camera becoming not good enough, but all your old footage.

If that means anything to you.

Dauntless, you bought the SJ5000 or another camera for your relative?

I like the fact I can buy a legit SJ from their own website, with a ton of options and extras, did I read it right when someone mentioned you can use GoPro stuff on the SJ5000 as well?

This camera is the ultimate for out of court settlements!

I don't remember the name of it, but remember the commercials where they're showing the traffic accidents in court? Not using it myself I'm short on opinion of the actual image quality. If it had been a 1080p in that configuration for under $100 I'd have one in my car just to shoot things that come up. I'd also prefer a real lens, even fixed, to that fisheye/pinhole that is so common.

I'll say the same for your drone with the built in camera, at least 720p preferably 1080p if you can afford it. The 480p will get old fast.

That's to be expected, now isn't it?

Found a nice little 1080p action cam in the RC world. RunCam HD - $56 shipped Amazon Prime. Good specs and great price - http://shop.runcam.com/runcam-hd/

Sort of a Mobius competitor. I do like the online app which you can create different configuration files and load them on the SD. Reboot the camera and the settings will be written. Convenient for Mac users.

Plus active support tech over on RCG - http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2386889

Dark video very early this morning and have since tweaked a few settings which might even look better next time I use it?

Weighs 43g. Another 6g for the mounting tray.

Cheap, simple, decent video. Not exactly waterproof but rugged enough to take bumps and bruises.

You know, 20 years ago a $100,000 television camera wasn't really going to give you as good a picture as that little piece of. . . .

I see these sort of cameras and I'm dying to run out and make some low budget feature with one. This 17 year old girl made a feature length 16mm film a few years ago, which proves her parents spoiled her rotten. I wonder if she might have gotten better images with a celphone.

Any updates on the camera's you guys/gals have been using?

Yup I've been using it few times now, quality is excellent. Downside is, no optical stabilisation means you absolutely need a gyroscope if you don't want jittering videos.

Wifi streaming over the phone is DOPE since you can also choose when to rec or not plus some settings on the go. But the cam already comes with a lcd screen so you can also just start recording and forget till you're done.

Photos are good, for a device of this size it is impressive. GoPro accessories fit just right there too.

FYI there is this crazy thing currently available on Kickstarter, waterproof so you can take it anywhere anytime with the waterproof gopro mount :

So I'm still not so sure how this works. I was thinking this was going to work wireless while I was at the show today, but I'm not finding the info on this on the site. Even so, shooting things moving all around me this could be handy. Reality show type shooting, etc. This is from the people who build the Phantom drone, this is the camera and gimbel from the drones.
