19" Motorcycle Wheels vs 26" Bicycle Wheels (rim and tires)

Anyone run Shinko 244s tubeless?

A guy on the Stealth thread was running the Shinko SR241 with a Tubliss set up. He loved it. Because he was using an 19" Tubliss system set up for a 19x1.85 rim, he had to modify Tubliss lock plate to fit a 19x1.40 rim. Other than that it was direct mount.

Let us know how it goes.

Will do. Gonna be a while though. Gotta build the wheel. Still need to figure out the spoke situation.

Hello. Does anyone have the real dimensions of the 19" wheel with the Shinko 244 2.75-19 tire?

Its 25" tall and 3.1 inches wide on a 19x1.40 rim inflated at 23PSI.

Good to know, thanks!

Wanted to get peoples thoughts between 19" and 21" moped rim. Install will be on a fat bike with rear hub motor. Hoping to get a minimum 3" wide tire. Looking at this two rims- https://www.jmpbparts.com/velg-b-keus-chroom-1-60-x-21.
https://www.jmpbparts.com/velg-chroom-1-50-x-19-radaelli.html. What rim would be easier to lace the motor into? Also if anyone has suggestion for different rim with link please.

Both will be fine to install hub into but smaller wheel will have better acceleration and less heat.
One of your suggested 1.5" rims is not aluminium which is fine but alum might be lighter.
Maybe make rear 19 with beafier tire and front 21 with light tire. Would look like enduro if you don't mind different wheel diameters.

Hello all, I am looking to build a couple of wheels for a luna cargo fat bike. I am thinking a Sturmey Archer RXL-RD5 5 for the hub. Anybody have opinions about these rims below? Do you know what size the spoke holes are? Also I am wondering about the spoke hole angles and how much I have to worry about that. I am also considering going with a prowheel 19x1.4, or a 26 inch fat rim. I have seen mixed reviews on the holmes hobbies moped nipples, what do people think about those? Are washers better? Thanks much!

19 1.4 will be less in diameter compared to 26 fat wheels. Check a tires diameters.
19 1.4 stronger, heavier; tire more durable, more miles to cover.
19 1.4 spoke hole angles will be ok if spoked with 2 or 3 cross. 1 cross is not so good but works too.
19 1.4 might be something 6mm-7mm. If using thin spokes with small nipple heads than need washers.

Thanks minde28383, the part about number of spoke crossings was especially helpful.

Has anybody got experience with these rims below?

At $68 they sure are the right price. Even cheaper than the tusk 21 x 1.6 which would pedal faster, but the 19 x1.85 inch would be helpful in getting on and off the bike, because it's a big one. I know both of these options would need washers, perhaps two sets of them if I dont use the holmes moped nipples.

These could be useful for lacing bike hubs to MC rims. I am at least 1.5 years away from building up my last Alpha Frame, and probably my last ebike build in general. I will look at these when I start.

Finally got my rear tire changed. The washer trick worked like magic and I was able to reuse my spokes from my old bicycle rim. Thank you all.

A few tips for those new to motorcycle rims and tires:
  • use tire lube to make the job like a million times easier. It helps avoid puncturing the tube and getting the tire bead to sit on the rim. The other benefit of tire lube is that it's designed to evaporate faster than soapy water. Not a fan of soapy water. It doesn't seem to do much as far as making the tire slick.
  • most tire spoons will work especially if you use tire lube but be sure not to bend the spoons too much or you risk puncturing the tube. Get at least two spoons.
  • I used m6 beveled washers for my 3ish mm spokes.
  • the tire helper tool was good for holding the tire down while I spooned the other side of the tire.
  • rim lock can help keep the tire from spinning while on the rim and sheering off the valve
  • rim strip is good to protect the tube from the spokes
  • I found a thicker tube to hopefully help with not getting flats
  • my spokes are an odd size. I have a 5000w hub motor with like 3ish mm spokes.

Does a 21” inch enduro (moto) tire fit in a 26” mtb DH rim?

Like Minde said, no it wont fit. A 26" bicycle is actually a 22" diameter rim where as a 21" motorcycle rim is a true 21". In past post I explained how the bicycle industries measure their wheels which is not the same at the motorcycle industry.

22 inch BMX rims = 18" motorcycle wheel diameter
https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=101767&hilit=inch#p1487941

A few of these rims come in 457 ISO size; and 18" motorcycle wheels are also 457 ISO  ( note that motorcycle tire measurements and bike tire measurements are completely different. A 16" motorcycle wheel is a 20" bike wheel, for example )

I think the average 18" MC tire will blow the bead on this rim.

Probably, mc tires are thicker stronger harder.
20" wide bicycle rims works with mc 16" tires, but regular 22" narrow bicycle rim with mc 18" tire doubtfully. Didn't see 22"&18" installed on any ebike yet.

A number of people have started running 18-2.75's on their radwagon cargo ebikes as a replacement for the stock 22x3.0's which are experiencing sidewall failures

https://www.reddit.com/r/RadPowerBikes/comments/v2nq1y/i_installed_motorcycle_tires_on_my_rw4_heres_what/

The stock 22" rims on the bike don't appear to be very wide either and none of them are having any issues running them, I wouldn't go over 2.75" though

Let me guess--the stock tires were Kenda?

Hey. I wanted to see if I could get some help with a wheel predicament.

I just traded one of my ebikes for a stealth bomber clone. Currently the bike has a72v 60 amp controller and 26 inch wheels with I believe a qs 205 motor in it.

I hate the 26 inch wheels and want to convert to 18 inch moto wheels. I'm seeing all types of varying prices for rims and no clear information on how to figure out spoke length.

Is it better to buy off ali express or local in the US?

Would a bike shop or motorcycle shop be a better place to have it done?

I'm upgrading the controller to a sabvoton 80 or 100 amp controller so no crazy power increase just want to upgrade the wheels to something I like better.

Also I don't want to spend a lot of money. I thought the bike had a sabvoton 80 amp controller but seems like it has some generic 60 amp controller so I have to buy that to. I probably should have just built one from scratch.

I haven't been able to read the whole thread so sorry if the information I'm asking for is buried somewhere in the middle.

Thanks.

21" moto rims are the closest commonly available equivalent to 26" MTB rim size (which would be 22" in motorcycle terminology).

Moto rims are usually drilled for dumb Lincoln Log spokes that take bonkers tension to keep from loosening in use.

What problem are you trying to solve by using the wrong size wheels? There's probably a more effective approach, which we might be able to help with if you give us more background.

What specifically do you hate about them, that requires changing them to 18" moto wheels? Knowing that may help us help you find the right solution for you, done the right way.

A bike (bicycle) shop probably won't have the tools to build motorcycle wheels, but you can check with the one(s) you'd usually have work on your stuff to see.

I don't like the size of the 26 bike wheels on the enduro style ebike. They just look to big and thin.

I want a smaller diameter wheel with a little thicker tire.

I got the bike in a trade and didn't do my research for how difficult it was to switch to moto rims. I've been seeing a lot of people in here do it and multiple youtube videos of people doing it so it didn't seem like a big deal.
