Hey Team.

Just a thread to leave a few breadcrumbs for other parents silly enough to build their child an electric trike/buggy. I'll try and keep it short and sweet.

First a few links.

Motor:
You will need the gear reduction, there is no two sprocket combination that will give you any torque otherwise, unless you employ a jackshaft which is much harder to do.

Arrived in 4 days, quiet and plenty of power for little people but also pulls me around no probs!

Controller.
Bought this first and killed the motor because of wrong gearing, just pulled more and more amps and creating heat trying to get upto speed. Still using the controller and throttle. Also a 1k log pot for master speed control.
Buy almost any kit without a motor. This controller is only worth about 10 bucks but it's still alive!

Sprockets, Chains, Suspension, brakes and atv spare parts.
No affiliation, they have heaps of decent Chinese stuff at great prices and deliver if a few days every time.

Batteries.
I use 4 x Makita 18v wired in series parralel for 36 to 40v.
I had some concerns about battery damage doing this but no issues so far. Still use them every day at work in my tools.

Battery Holders.
These should be much cheaper but anywho...

Fuses
1 wired per battery with 20amp blade, because fires ain't very funny

Switch
Turns out on and off is handy

Seat
Looked at all sorts of gocart seats for stupid money, then found a decent kids booster seat on the side of the road lol. Has rigid head protection and easy to bolt in.

My build.
This actually started with a 10 year old 110cc quad that I grabbed second hand for 80bucks and chopped the ass off then added a new front end.
Why? Because quads are kinda deadly and I wanted little man as close to the ground as possible.
Plus it was the cheapest way to get axle, wheels, brakes etc.

I welded 50x25mm rails off the rear and then chopped a 16" bmx up for the downtube and front steerer.

I locked out the suspension so I didn't have to deal with chain growth. Half flat tires is plenty of squish for most stuff.

I also added a very shite steering lock because kids like to do panic turns and can flip anything at full speed... you have been warned!

Will update for reference as I go.

Cheers all and have fun.
Dean.
