Van Moof bikes become a total nightmare when they need even the most basic service or parts replacement. I've been burned by those miserable things badly enough that I won't take them in at the shop anymore.

There's a big cost to hiding all the parts that make a bike an e-bike. The bottom line is you won't ride it nearly as long or far as if you had gotten an e-bike with physically accessible, normal commodity parts instead. It will die young for the sake of fashion, when necessary parts are no longer available or when it costs more than the bike is worth to fix it.

Yes but that's what the profit motive requires.

When the pricing gets low enough from ebikes going mainstream, they will be designed proprietary and with planned obsolescence in mind.

Sustainability and best long term value for consumers, require well designed and enforced regulations.

And that requires governments with citizens' interests at heart, not protecting corporate profits.
