No need to be an engineer to see that it could be made much better, yet with less material.

Some of that was for the crumple zones required for the university competition.
 
That was fascinating and enlightening. I built several tadpole chassis out of bolted alloy tubing quite a while ago but used that great Aussie engineering guy (can't remember his full name, Julian Edgar something) to do designs. Obviously much simpler that these guys but some of the principles were similar. My basic designs came from Sid Gowdy and his Americruiser 2000. Interesting and fun stuff.
