Eternal outskirts of Moscow and beyond (LOTS of pics!)

First day of spring 2020... and it looks like winter was there. But it doesn't. Snow is just couple of days fresh.

An creepy and isolated place (just how i like them). Small ponds of Koroviy Vrag river. In modern russian language its name sound like "An enemy of the cow" or "The cow's adversary". But it really means Koroviy Ovrag, which translates as "Cows ravine". BTW, there's train station Mark nearby, which jokingly mispronounced as Mrak (which means "darkness"). A lovely place to visit:

That's all for this week!

What a week you got to have. I don't agree about the snow not coming here. We have Christmas and somehow it's still mid fall, It'll sneak in a transition straight to mid spring in time for St. Patrick's Day.

You're making me realize if I DO get to finally fix my old scooter, it won't be what I want. I want a big bike like yours.

The snow can stay in Russia!

I wish it could! But this winter in Moscow was snowless...

Same thing this year in Moscow. September, october, november, denovember, janovember, februember, martomber, april instead of proper winter :(

That's a good choice. I wish you luck sincerely!

I know you have a massive battery on your bike, how do they handle the cold? you run pretty low amps per cell, does the pack self warm itself with use?

Yes, you're right - self-heating of battery in my setup is negligible. I've measured it once and i got only 2 Celsius of temperature rise after 15 kilometers through city traffic (and city traffic is the less effective and thus most heat producing case of my rides).

But my battery pretty massive (~28 kilograms) and keeps heat long enough to never touch zero degrees while i ride in winter conditions for several hours. Since my garage has central heating and i got a warm place to park my bike on my work - absolutely no troubles with winter temperatures.

My last ride before self-isolation-stay-at-home policy was enforced. First days of march. There was no winter, no snow, but spring mud is right on schedule!

The "hill" in a background is actualy a closed landfill, infamous Salarievo. It was in a middle of nowhere in Moscow oblast when dumping of waste started, but now it's a Moscow territory and lots of residential buildings is rising around:

Well, that's it... not only for this week, but for some time ahead also. This thread finally catched up my instagram. Next batch of photos should be from some brand new ride of mine!

Your bike reminds me growing up seeing things from behind the iron curtain and so many had this tank like iron utilitarian simplicity, like it was the bare minimum and would survive a bomb hit. Right now it's the bike you could ram the barricades with and escape Seatlle.

His e-bike looks like something from Mad Max. Just noticed there is no rear disc caliper, must be regen braking direct drive hub motor.

Yeah guys, you got me right! Brutal simplicity is always in my constructions. I like it that way :)
There is none mechanical brake on rear wheel, only electrical (which is quite powerful on Nucular controllers, btw). Still two separate brakes though, so no harm done in safety department.

have you thought of doing a Bob Yak style trailer for your generator?

Yep, using trailer is literally the first thing i thought when i planned to use generator! But generator turn out to be so small and lightweight, so i've dropped the idea for a while. But i got plans to switch to more powerful generator and already working on coupling my moped and cheap bicycle trailer.

Right on 2020 NY eve i've got that package from China:
IMG_20191223_164752.jpg

And that is what was inside:
IMG_20191223_165601.jpg

IMG_20200213_111232.jpg

Strangely enough, i've failed to find local shop which can lace my new QS 273 v3 40H motor into 18 inch moto rim. So i've ordered 96mm 12G spokes and started to do lacing myself:
IMG_20200613_165116.jpg

And then i've failed:
IMG_20200613_170922.jpg

IMG_20200613_165104.jpg

Around that time COVID hit whole planet hard, so i've decided to wait out the storm and ordered new spokes a couple months later. But my waiting was worth it - new 95 and 85 mm 10G spokes arrived and i've finally laced my new motor succesfully:

IMG_20200711_153438.jpg

IMG_20200711_171124.jpg

Then i've waited some more weeks for new rear fork (due to axle flats width 12mm vs 10mm on old 205 motor) and finally went to garage for motor swapping:

Four kilos of weight difference... not great, not terrible. It's great considering 200+ kg of total weght (myself and my vehicle), but not so great considering where exactly that weight is placed.

Hooray, my first joyride since my trip to Salarievo in march! To test my new motor i went south from Moscow to Podolsk town vicinity:
IMG_3374.jpg

IMG_3381.jpg

My first encounter was sewage sludge. It's like a condensed milk, but with sewage instead of milk:
IMG_3382.jpg

IMG_3384.jpg

IMG_3385.jpg

IMG_3388.jpg

IMG_3391.jpg

IMG_3394.jpg

IMG_3400.jpg

The road to sewage treatment plant was blocked with small layer of that sewage sludge, so i've carefly tried to ride through it:
IMG_3403.jpg

Big mistake. It's sticky as tar and smell was... unimaginable strong:
IMG_3405.jpg

IMG_3407.jpg

So i've dropped the idea of visiting sewage treatment plant and went to nearby fields:
IMG_3409.jpg

IMG_3412.jpg

IMG_3420.jpg

IMG_3424.jpg

Then i've went to unfinished dam near Motcha river mouth. It's a cool abandoned place per se, but this summer it's swarming with local teenagers, hikers and industrial climbers of all sorts, so i've took one pic from distance and went to dirt roads to have some fun:
IMG_3431.jpg

IMG_3438.jpg

Narrow paved b-roads are fun too:

Yet another dirt road took me to chamomile field:
IMG_3467.jpg

Chamomiles as far as eye can see:

And intoxicating smell of chamomile knocked sewage sludge stench from my nose:

Where a road is blocked:
IMG_3507.jpg

Is always a muddy detour:
IMG_3509.jpg

That pic pretty much sums up my impressions from that trip:
IMG_3497.jpg

And what about my new 273 motor? First of all - it's always cool. In situations when my old 205 hits thermal protection threshold this 273 is barely reaches 80 Celsius on its windings (which is nothing for hub motors). That extra 4 kilos totally worth it.

What on earth do you guys eat in Russia?
ive seen some pretty offensive deposits in baby diapers but that was nasty

have you checked that tire lately for holes?

goatman said:

Oh, believe me, sewer sludge is not THAT bad. I dont know if it is some evolutionary device to keep mammal babies skweeky clean, but baby poop is way too nastier. Sewer sludge dont even smell like sh..t, it's more like rotting seaweed or stale swamp water, it's intense but not revolting. So my tyres are OK, but smell was there for couple of days :)
