Eternal outskirts of Moscow and beyond (LOTS of pics!)

Abandoned and destroyed sewer treatment facilities:

But people still need to go to toilet, right? So, thats the result - literally river of sh..t flowing down to fish farm ponds for years:

Some trees just can't stand smell, i guess:

Couple of kilometers from that place i've stumble upon deep puddles on the road... with strong smell of sewer. Again?! There obviously something wrong with that department in Staraya Kupavna vicinities:

I didn't want to bath in this puddles and decided to use railway instead:

On my way home i've visited old ash ponds of ТЭЦ-20 (Tarkovsky shot his Stalker movie on this ash ponds, back in a 70's they still were in use). As i've said before, all Moscow power plants were switched from coal to natural gas since then and those ash ponds utilised as landfill. For last couple of years they poured a mountain of clay and loam and rubble from demolition of old garages, houses and construction sites from all around Moscow. Due to flat landscape of Moscow, every heap of dirt is source of nice pics, so there i go!

After my last year 500+ km ride with generator i've started to think about a bigger one.The main disadvantage of my small generator was necessity of charging battery through night - all that noise and refuelling in the middle of the night was definitely bad for comfort of camping. But bigger generator means using a trailer - so i've bought one: some "german" knock-off of a Bob Yak style trailer.

Here it is, as a wheelbarrow for transporting my new 273 motor from home to garage:

Friend of mine helped me out with custom adapters:

First test ride - transporting my old 205 motor from garage to home:

And finally - my old small generator took its place for a first proper ride with generator-trailer:
IMG_20200801_173735_1.jpg

For first ride i've chose one-day 250~ish kilometer route to Protvino town and back. I've took a road through another "scientific" town - Obolensk, famous of SRCAMB institute (those guys helps out to fight COVID among other duties):

Road to Protvino:

But what it is, behind the bushes?
IMG_3884.jpg

This is a main goal of my trip, the remaining headframes of a construction shafts used to build infamous UNK collider! That one is a "tent-like" headframe, similar to ones of early Moscow subway construction headframes, a rare sight nowadays. Sign above headframe means "GLORY TO LABOR":
IMG_3876.jpg

A sudden pig (which i've mistook for a dog from a distance):
IMG_3895.jpg

IMG_3888.jpg

Another one with a much modern look, urban explorers sometimes call that headframe type as "watertower-like":

now this is about to get really good.

i know alot of members here frown on this but for those of us where solar is pretty useless for long range, its the only solution right now. i run my bob yak at 65km/h with 35lbs in it quite often

And another tent-like construction shaft headframe:

Well... a ride went flawless. I've didn't even noticed that trailer was there. I'm ready for a bigger generator now!

That's all for this week!

Are you powering the controller straight from the generator or just charging up a spare battery?

Whats the size of the generator you have in the picture? I only went back a half dozen or show posts but you did mention it again but nothing specific.

What size generator would you recommend?

Looking at the chargers input requirements for a given charger. Say you were lucky enough to find a Meanwell charger that uses 120Vac and 10A of power to spit out 48Vdc and 25A, generator would need to be 1200W, so up size it a bit to 1400W loaded running wattage.

Looks like your trailer could use a fender in front

Thanks! The only thing what bothers me about my new trailer - is lack of suspension. When it hits edges of pothole in road i can feel its pain.

No, no spare batteries (yet). In my case: charger powered from generator, output of charger connected to charging port of BMS, discharging port of BMS goes to controller power input. Generator runs as i ride. Since all power FETs in BMS are in open state during ride - controller draws power from generator and battery simultaneously. When controller draws less, than current of a charger - battery gets charged, when controller draws more than charger can give - battery discharges.

I use an identical twin of that Chinese generator: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Smart-Power-price-mini-generator_60802434435.html

I didn't buy it from Aliexpress though, i've bought a local one branded as "Patriot 1000i". I think, you can find something similar on local market with convenient warranty terms and modest price.

It's really less than 10 kilos of weight, with size of a 20-25 liter jerry can (user manual says it's 395х209х355 millimeters, that's about right). The only drawback of this machine - is power of only 0.7 kW, which is not enough to compensate power consumption of a moped running at 50 km/h. Hence my future switch to more powerful model.

That calculations of yours is about right, IMO. The only thing is confusing marking of generator - manufacturers like to rate it for it's peak power output, not constant one. So choose carefully, odds are, your model would be with badge of "something 2000 watts", when it's really constant output power would be around 1300-1500 W you needed. I'm personally would go for a converted telecom PSUs as charger, the ones with current and voltage adjustion - then you can fine-tune power you drawing from generator, so it would run with optimal load.

Oh, i've given up on a fight with dirt long time ago. I've accepted an offroad enthusiasts mantra "a clean offroader - is a shame on its owner" and trying to live up to it since then :D

Too bad you have graffiti in Russia, too. Do they at least talk of restoring all the damaged places?

In a big or rich cities authorities trying to keep graffitys in order - there a dedicated places for a street art, all other illegal drawings got quickly painted over by maintenance workers. Abandoned places are got graffities all over them, and nobody gives a damn (it's understandable, since those places got abandoned for a reason). I'm personally don't have a problem with a funny and smart drawings in a appropriate places. But meaningless scribbles i'm found extremely annoying (what's a meaning of that anyway, some gang tags or something?).

It's all meaningless. I assume there it's the same as here where they have a tag name, a tag "Crew," aka gang, all of which they want to be famous. So having their name scribbled, their crew scribbled, oh so important to them. What a mess. And a lot of them never outgrow it, I see guys in their 30's STILL tagging.

Finally! A real and actual outskirts of Moscow :) Nekrasovka district, a newly developed neighborhood with brand-new subway line. However, this area plagued with ecological difficulties. No wonder, it's builded literally on old sewage sludge reservoirs and crammed between three (!) recultivated landfills, enormous sewage treatment facility (which processes 2/3 of all Moscow sewage, btw) and incinerator plant.

Kuchino landfill south of Nekrasovka:
