Long time lurker. Lots of great minds in here . I got one of those Hyundia HSG motors for a future project.

My first inclination was to hook it up to a Vesc and run it without the resolver . It can run the motor but it only has enough torque to get the motor to spin . Fail.

The challenge with these motors are the resolvers . I don’t want to make a controller .I have an inverter board from a 2nd gen Prius but everything I have re

I have been thinking about adding sensors to the

The resolver on the back is like a 6 pole motor without the magnets.

I woke up out of my dead sleep and thought why not add magnets to the “rotor”

So I removed the coils and added magnets to the rotor .

120 degree for the hall sensors ?

Am I on the right track here ?

You need 40 degree hall placement. Could you show me your vesc settings?
Also, what voltage are you running it with? It needs over 200v to get proper power, I rewound mine to delta to get some more rpm at lower volts.

There is a commercial product out there that i use with Lebowski drive. RLS magnet reader...
There is a small magnet with angular polarization and a chip that reads its change in angle. This then converts to appropriate signal. I use its commutation function, but other outputs ABZ or sincos could be used.

I made a fitting for the encoder in place(centered) of the resolver.
