I am trying to come up with a minimal list of tools to carry.
Strictly for emergencies of the type "Darn, something came loose".
More extensive repairs to involve getting the bike transported (do not leave it locked to a utility pole or tree).

This is what I have come up with:
  • ==============================================
    Minimal Tool kit (emergencies only):
    ==============================================
    1/4 inch square drive sockets:
    13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 mm six point hex
    1/4 (6.35mm) hex bit drive socket

    1/4 (6.35mm) hex drive bits:
    #1, #2, #3 Phillips (aka cross point)
    1/8, 5/32, 3/16 inch straight
    T25 Torx
    3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 mm hex
    1/4 inch (6.35 mm) square drive adapter

    1/4 inch (6.35 mm) square drive ratchet

    1/4 inch (6.35 mm) hex drive "L" handle

    1/4 inch (6.35 mm) hex screw driver handle (1/4 sq drive socket in back end)

    5 inch long locking pliers (because they "grab" when nothing else does)
    ----------------------------------
    battery powered light

    Cell phone, valid credit/debit card and number of reliable wrecker/towing service

    =============================================
    Extended Tool kit:
    =============================================
    Air pump (with presta adapter)
    Valve core tool
    Metal tire levers
    Spoke wrench
    6 inch long adjustable wrench (wide jaw)
    chain breaker
    Pliers, Wire cutter/stripper/crimper
    small multi-meter (with new battery)

    =============================================
    Expendables kit:
    =============================================
    Inner Tube Patch kit
    6 inch long tie wraps
    6x1/2 inch hook/loop straps
    roll of vinyl electrical tape
    roll of fiberglass reinforced packing tape
    missing link
    --------------------------
    Spare Inner Tube
    Foldable tire
    Spare spokes
    spare fuse (if the bike has fuses)

My hub drive? Nothing. Sunglasses and speed.

My mid drive with 1/10 the power? Everything. Tubes, scrwdrivers, all the allen wrenches, chain, pump, clampo meter, leads, knife, pins for piercing wires, spare flashlight.

Evolution of my basic toolkit has been driven by some multi-week touring rides -- me, pedal bike, small panniers, credit card. So my goal has been keep it light and minimal, but be able to deal with most situations. This little kit plus a spare inner tube (not shown) has proven able to handle just about anything needed to keep a pedal bike going (at least limping along :lol: ). The tiny 8-mm wrench is for the little shift cable attachment gizmo used on Shimano IGH hubs... it is the only special-purpose tool, but when you need it you need it. Spare key for lock has proven useful. $20 has proven really useful!

What do you need the #1 and #3 philips for?
#1 for that wee lock screw on the BBS02 speedometer sensor mount.
#3 ... have no idea but I do not like surprises.
