Hyena's e-bike builds (now with HD video)

50+ mi is totally doable with the raptor

That's what I wanted to hear! Count me in. I'll be stacking away money. Do you think we could do anything to help the Fighter out? Maybe a new higher powered battery and a controller? I've been looking at water-proof Kelly controllers. Any thoughts?

As for the crash. I'm glad that I held onto the handlebars. Probably would have hit the guardrail chest first, if not for that. Oh, and the bike that I crashed was a 2009 Russian Ural Sahara. Awesome bike, just not what I expected. Right hand turns are a killer. Just sold my KTM 950 Adventure too. I'm done with motorcycles. The money for the Fighter was going to go for a brand new Yamaha TW200 but I started looking at this website again a couple of weeks ago. I really needed to go a different direction. I stopped to show my best buddy the Fighter last night on my way home from buying it. He was with me when I crashed and kept me from going into shock. Probably saved my life. He thought it was cool but didn't really understand it or why I bought it. Oh well, I love it!

EDIT: I have some thoughts on something else that I would like to talk with you about. If you get some time.

A small ute with solar panel tray would be cool too.
How realistic would that actually be? As in what kind of charge could you get out of that much surface area assuming a good day of full sun? I haven't looked into solar stuff much, but it would be neat having a little bike charging setup at home eventually.

If you're seriously interested shoot me and PM.
8k for 300kw is pretty good! But my next car will probably be a smallish 4x4. Or just a better e-bike.

I found an old jet ski washed up on the beach at Kurnell today if you're looking for a smaller project =p

Many people don't understand until they take it for a ride. If you really want to hit the point home have them ride a trial on a regular mtb then throw them the keys to the fighter!

As for upgrading the fighter, it's certainly possible but for what you end up doing and spending you're probably better to enjoy the fighter for what it is then upgrade to something else when the time comes. Or better still keep both and choose which one to take out depending on what sort of riding you want to do.
The battery makes up the biggest chunk of the kit price and if there's nothing wrong with yours now it'd be silly to toss it. The fighter also has a fairly small body and while you can still certainly get a good boost over stock (check out some of my youtube vids of my old one in action) you can't expect the same range as a raptor or even a bomber from a physically smaller battery compartment. Also if you DID just upgrade the stock controller and battery you'd smoke the motor unless you also implement temperature monitoring, which involves pulling the motor apart and running new wiring through the axle which is too much of a PITA for most.

Oh the solar wouldnt be intended to add any meaningful range extension or actually power the vehicle, it'd almost be more for more for looks as an EV appropriate hardcover.

Yeah when I was a teenager 8k got me a VN commodore!

Wow, random! No accompanying body washed up near by ? :p

Hahah yeah I figured it'd only be useful if you're stuck in the desert for a few days or weeks.

I saw a video where the high-power cycle guys were testing out solar mats. Seemed kind of silly. Holy shit I just checked and they want $2600 for a 300W panel.

It's Kurnell dude. The hard part isn't finding bodies, but linking the right one to the jetski.

There's something pretty funny about offering a solar panel of a few hundred watts with a bike of a few thousand watts and expect the panel to be of some use.
Greenwashing? Or nipples on men.

Yeah that's the definition of false economy!

Yeah atleast I admitted mine is more decorative than functional! I guess if you went camping or something and could leave it to charge all day you'd get a little power back, but I've had this discussion with people multiple times in the past and it usually ends in me recommending a second battery for the same or less money or for many they want it for somewhere they go regularly like a weekender in the bush I say get a car battery or 2 and a few fixed solar panels that can charge over time.

Also, idle facebook postings.

Has everyone worked out the primary theme of my posts there lately ?

Nope made locally by a guy in Qld. Hopefully you dont need any further replacements but if so I'll give you his details.

Hey that's cool how the wire goes through on an angle. I suspect it would be a stronger use of material and easyer to slide on bearings
Yep the TCs are cross drilled like this which apparently made for a heap more machining work than the usaul side slot style! It also meant the wires had to be cut off to remove the existing axle but no biggy to join.

Sam, this beefy new units brings my axle folly to an end!
*boom*

ahahaha! haven't Been on here for so long and forgot how funny cool you lot were :D

As a by-the-by, I had the pleasure of seeing my first Hyena raptor frame today when a mutual customer rocked up to my workshop on his just finished build...

Sweet frame... absolutely sweet, and I know what sweet is fer sher... (check sig for credentials)

AND!!! of great mysticysm to me and something I wanted to trumpet here... with short back story...

the mutual customer has been building e-bikes for about two months.. he now has four...

He screwed up and forgot to put on one of the axle nuts (non-drive side) after some adjustment before bringing to mah workshop to show it off...
(full build hooked up to run 9kw surge through a Crystalyte crown in 26" (I think 26".. Hyena would know) 96V Nominal, 90 Amp surge controller, an awesome Hyena Kit, name I don't know... Please Jay set me straight :D

... between his place and mine, a lot of wot and wheelies were had.. of course these would have been in off road scenarios, and it is not impossible that the man DID actually drive a car or van with bike to end of my lane and then rode it straight to my workshop on non public roads as all good e-bikers would :D... Not impossible... Speeds of over 100 kph were reached according to the one and only known witness (the rider)... This lad is unlikely to lie.

the clamping dropout thingies integral to the frame were tight on both sides, and one axle nut was on, and no rotation apparent of axle in dropout...AFTER the bike had been absolutely hammered for about 20km... that's some good engineering methinks.

^^ That's the trumpeting bit

Anyways.. shout out to Hyena for importing these frames... I have seen one with my own eyes and I judge it freakin awesome...

Hey Jay if I kiss your arse enough will you send me one for... FREE!!!!

Cheers big ears and ta for your help today.

Joe

Glad you liked the latest hotness Joe :)

haha it's so hot off the press I haven't even come up with one of my trademark gimmicky physicsy model names for it yet :p
I think I shall call it... The Positron 8)
It's not 90A burst though, it'll sustain that sort of current if demanded - which I suspect was part of our friends problem! I'd say he was running north of 10kw. He was keen to turn it up to 11 but I won't be building them that nuts for the general public.

I should have saved the guy $15 and just given him and on/off button instead of a throttle :p

Oh yeah, they're strong. Look at my race results, I snapped the above pictured axle and managed to ride back with the wheel held by only one half of it!

haha I wish I was in a position to do so!
I tell ya what, I'll give you $2 off every time you smooch up to my hindquarter. Only 824 to go, which is only a post a day for the next 2 and a bit years

Speaking of my raptor hatchlings, here's a short 30 second montage of race footage from the hunter EV festival. Look at that hosing off the starting line

Thanks buddy. Yeah she gets off the line OK
It wasn't until editing the footage that I realised Mr QuietRush was pedaling off the line. Naughty naughty :p

Rod's been stealing all the raptor lime light with his build lately so I though I might try and claw some back with this :p
It's not much of a secret that I like white bikes but I reckon this one in black and red looks pretty nice! I can't wait to get it all finished and see how it turns out.
I'm making this for a guy in Qld and it will be a turn key, ready to ride high performance ebike. I dont normally make complete turn key ebikes as they're very time consuming to assemble and then delivery is a hassle but I've been getting alot of enquiries so I'm doing this as a trial to see if it's a viable option for me in the future.

This is just the frame parts and fork laid out but basically it'll be a raptor 140 with all the options - moto seat and foot pegs for offroad use but also a single speed pedal drive line.

Would it be wrong of me if I said I touch myself while looking at the bike porn picture? Not saying I do, just wondering if it would be wrong!

What a great looking start.

Its Okay Tom, as long as you play this song really loud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=wv-34w8kGPM#t=29

Jay, definitely a nice bike in the making. Red and black look tough. Is your customer going with moto wheels?
