Knocking noise from geared grunt hub motor

Bought a geared front hub motor from China and got it spinning using this controller. As the no load speed increases (I haven't put it on a rim yet) there is a mechanical knocking noise coming from it (at lower RPMs it turns smoothly). The vendor claims I'm using the wrong controller. Has...

    AGEING

If you could live life backwards: You start out dead and get that out of the way. Then you wake up in an old age home feeling better every day. Then you get kicked out for being too healthy. Enjoy your retirement and collect your pension. Then when you start work, you get a gold watch on your...

Hydrogen Explosion at Japanese Nuclear Plant!

Not wishing to detract from the heroic efforts of the workers at the plant, but it seems more like a farce to me. Why did they have the backup generators in a place where they could be flooded? If there was more openness then surely someone could have pointed out the risk in that? How come...

The Most Prophetic warning of our time?

That's exactly the fatalistic feudal attitude which the Enlightenment fought to overcome by placing man at the centre of the world. Worryingly it's this misanthropic environmentalist/climate alarmist fear which the political elite are promoting as a way of securing a last vestige of authority.

The futility of the Prius and the end of the world …

Think the Earth is finite? Think again The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. ps. I drive an ev because I'd prefer to live in a city with cleaner air where we don't have to wipe up black dust in our houses.

the importance of heating/cooling your batteries

There was a video posted recently of a guy giving a lecture on lithium ion cell chemistry, can't find it atm. IIRC he said that 50degC was the temp at which the organic solvent in the cells starts to degrade. My headways get up to 35degC after a half hour run at 25degC ambient and I haven't...

    8 kWh Battery pack advice

I'm not you sure you want to be sitting on top of 144 - 180V DC with the possibility of melting snow in the equation. This is one application where I'd want to keep the system voltage at ~50V max and gear to that.

    General Discussion "allowable" topics

EDIT: Refined proposal: 1. Rename 'The Cesspool' to 'Everything Else'. 2. Move 'General Discussion' into this section. 3. Rename 'Other Toxic Discussions' to 'Potentially Offensive Topics' and keep the caveat 'WARNING: This area may contain offensive posts or controversial topics.' 4. Make...

    General Discussion "allowable" topics

I voted other. The problem is partly one of structure. Placing 'General Discussion' near the top of the forum list gives it too much prominence. I enjoy reading off topic (ie. non EV) stuff and agree that it helps build the community. I can fully understand Bob taking offence to his thread...

Can I solder directly to Headway 38120 cells?

I soldered directly onto Headway 38120L cells to make four 5p4s packs each of which is the same size as a single 38AH Greesaver SLA batt. I couldn't use the screw terminal 'S' cells because the batt boxes in my moped weren't big enough. I've got over 1500km on my cells and they show no sign of...

    TOOLS FOR BIKE BUILDERS

Excellent work valy, keep posting please. I'd like to see if you can get better results with the bender with thicker walled pipe, if/when you get round to it. Do you have any details about that pump, where to buy, seems to have a decent flow rate and draws well from a shallow reservoir. Cheers.

No luck soldering aluminum cell tabs. What am I doing wrong?

I'd forget about soldering the tabs and buy some clips like these. Fold the tabs together and slip some clips over them. Cover in kapton tape. Job done. :D EDIT: Balance wires can be soldered to a thin strip of copper which the tabs are then folded on to. It maybe a good idea to put the kapton...
