Here's a guy surfing a 45-foot face with an electric-powered board. $4,000 but if you surf waves this big they'll give you one for free.
 
If I was Garrett, I wouldn't bother. It's probably a bit more fun to ride that 100 footer in Portugal. :lol:
That WaveJet is a nice setup. The 4k throws me off and the speeds are just meant to get you out in the surf though. I want something that will go 20mph or more to ride lakewater not waves. I think the wavejet only goes around 12. You might be able to change out the motors/batteries on them though, which could make it worthwhile.
I do think these big wave surfers would love to not have to be towed into waves. If they had a board that went 20mph they could paddle into more of them.
 
Same here. I was excited about that. I'll post about my project. I do feel like he was behind the Lapanga? board that came out. Sorry no link, I can't find it anymore. I may have the name wrong. I just think that because he was German, probably no real connection.

I am also looking to use an 6 Kilowatt in-runner which does 520 RPM/V with 8s, that is ~16,000 RPM at the impeller!
I have tested the jet with the motor in the pool and it seems very strong.

What motor did you use? (What RPM per volt?)
which battery? (what voltage?)
Which ESC/controller? how many Amps peak?
What is the volume of your board? (how many litters?)
Was the jet strong enough to get you to planning on the water?
I saw your video with the young boy on the board. do you have another video with a full grown person riding it?

I know that most of the stand up jet skis using 701-750 ccm motors have rpm limit around 7500 rpm.
Thats why someone have to link a few of the 80-100 180kv motors togheter and try combined with hv160. That gives 8500 unloaded. That's perfect for a ice replacement.

Some guy that supposedly know his stuff said that you will get 1hp out of the pump for every 1kw you put in. I don't know if that is spot on, but may be.

The kawaski 550 have 37hp stock and put out 360lbs of thrust. If we divide the thrust produced by motor hp we get 9.2 lbs of thrust per hp. Maybe you motor can provide peaks of 8hp, so let say max thrust out of the pump will be 73.6 lbs, or 33.4kg of thrust. That's not a lot, but may be enough for a surfboard?

PVC jet unit
It looks like home-made PVC jet pump should work:

4 inch prop, 6-to-1 gearing ratio
8 horse power leopard motor - motor spooling up to maybe 30k rpm, looking at around 4-5k rpm at the prop (~350 usd)
4 blue 6s (5000 mAH each) lipo's ( 2 in parallel, 2 in series) - around 20 minutes at full thrust

I was working on one similar to what you have in mind. Never got the project done before the cold weather came. I was working on a old sit down wave runner. Figured that would be the cheapest way to try. If it got the wave runner moving at all I figure it would power the surfboard. Plus you have a waterproofed container to keep the electrics dry. I was having problems getting the motor connected to the jet shaft. A couple of versions I tried stripped out. I was using the 80-100 turnigy motor. That should output enough torque and RPM in theory. The surfjets are only using around 80cc and if you subtract all the extra weight of the ICE, it should be comparable. My machinist wasn't much help in getting a coupler done in time. The drive shaft of the motor is pretty soft metal and didn't handle the torque well. I did get one attempt in the water, which lasted about 30 seconds before it stripped.
I will be back at it in a few months when the snow melts.

Well it took a lot of years, and a good beating on Shark Tank but it was all worth it! The week that followed I had a dozen offers on the table and now have everything we need including an all start crew to have our first units ready by spring. Now completing testing on the beta run, but so far we have reduced the power draw by 50% and increased the speed by 20%. http://youtu.be/vSobM4TWCBc New website will be up in a few days, along with a public announcement but our first run boards are already sold. I think I might try print the ducted tube parts and buy the prop separately, If I make the tube wall parts about 10mm, it should be strong enough...
This thread is very interesting, using the pvc pipes is a great idea..

If i can make something similar, I might try print a few of these and try and make a multi motor kayak that i have been wanting to do for ages..
I want to try and bring the cost down. Using the pvc pipes makes it so much lighter.

Edit,
Id like to add lots of bearing supports so the shaft can be mounted well, Also printing the motor mount would be good to keep the weight down.

im getting to the drawing board
