I've been running my 24 volt hub motor at 36 volts by using a 36v controller. My question is what exactly is the damage I'm doing by running it at the higher voltage. In my short tests I check for heat at the hub but so far it seems to run without over heating. Thank you for any comments about your experience doing the same too.

If it's a brushless motor, you aren't doing any damage unless you are running it at continuous higher watts than it's rated for. If it's a brushed motor, the higher voltage will tend to wear out the brushes and armature quicker.
