Transporting heavy ebikes - show me your solution

Just my bike, back of the pickup, tho' that's a pain because of the canopy.
My bike & her trike, a small 8ft flat bed trailer, easy to load.

To make a bike fit on a harbor freight platform carrier, I bolted on a vertical piece, that held the bikes front wheel. Then lots of bungees all over. Any place I put a bungee, I put two of them.

The strapping down comment I was talking about a swagman rack, but was not so clear about it. That rack held a bike by the frame real nice, but I still added bungees to back it up.

Trailers are a good option if you have property to park one. My frankenstien longtail bike could only be carried on a trailer. Old boat trailers can be found cheap at times. Mine has carried windsurfers, bikes, scooters, motorcycles, lumber, plywood. etc.

Last month I made our yearly trek down to Gulf Shores, AL from Michigan.

All interstate 69 to 65, about 1k miles each way drive, during which I kept out a sharp eye for bike carriers and I saw MANY.

The engineer in me has me wondering the weight rating of this carrier in the pic below, now that is a bunch of bikes.

There was another guy in a black jeep who had 2 ebikes on their wheels, but he zipped passed me before my D could take a pic.

My carrier?
Well, my buddy's son in NC sold me his carrier, my buddy is driving it to MI, he went to visit his son/grand sons there. I am going to pick it up today.
Best part is that he basically gave it to me for pennies, I appreciate it. I will post a pic later!

Guys
Here is the one I got coming,
all steel, can be easley be adapted if needed, also the spacing of the wheel wells allows for each wheel
to sit in a recessed pocket and a bolt is inserted over the rim and thru the side carriers supports,
locking the bike in and to the carrier rack, I'll also use HD ratchet straps to secure the bike better.
YMMV

Don

Nice heavy duty, basically the one in HB but made of steel instead of aluminum.

These you are supposed to strap down the handlebars and keep them stable, you could add some swing arms at each end, I really don't want to strap down my handle bars given all the wires I have running around them.

I plan on using a couple of 6' long ratchet straps,
one on each side with soft wrap straps (motor cycles types) one off each side of the seat post stem,
that will keep the bike straight up/down and pulling down into the wheel well dropin's spots etc,
with the bolt thru over the rims, I don't think it will move.........LoL
ps, and if I need to change and add anything, I have a wire feed welder.

Updated information,
Here is a photo showing the bike carrier and longer ramps and the way I tie it down for 4x4 off road carrying, with my 90# Wart Hog MD750 bike.
https://imgbb.com/x2CqyB8

The top (longer) ramp is a 6' folding type, the bottom one is OEM, just too short,
I also use no hook ratchet straps to hold the bike tires in the carrier wheel wells,
just put over 400+ rough 4x4 road hauling and worked like a champ. HtH's.

Don

That should keep em safe :)

Drum roll ..
KUAT 2 bike carrier with a Bike repair stand built in, wow, I am impressed,
Each spot can take 60 lbs, so I am guessing I can carry ONE bike that weighs a bit more.

I will have to test it out with the fat bike wheels and see if it fits when I finish it.

For heavy ebikes I would suggest the one that attaches to the trailer hitch. 100lbs+. You roll on to it with eaz as it has a small ramp you can use and use straps to secure it.

This one is made of steel and is comparable to the one harborfright sells,

I saw similar one in aluminum but with 2 spots, looked pretty meaty, my neighbor 3 block away had it in his driveway, I need to swing by and find out the details.

I found these in my sailing club's parking lot.

The vertical rack seems popular with mtb-biker, saw one one my way back from our trip last weekend, it had 5 dh mtbs, beefier version below,

Overclocker, do you need to get it inspected/registered/licensed to use it on the road?

No trailer for me unfortunately,
Have you seen me back up a trailer? yah, I avoid anything with a trailer, not my cup of Chai.

I saw a lot of fufu mtbs on the road last weekend on drive out and back home,
I was out on the pier yesterday, this chap came along to pee in the porta potty, he took his bike in with him, call carbon road bike, he was wearing matching biking tights

found something like this https://loloracks.com/products/6-bike-rack-for-2-hitch
wonder if this really stay stiff with 6 mtb ebikes ...

I went with the future proof 1UP Super Duty Single rack (225 lb total capacity)

1UP Rack.jpg

Really nice and well-proportioned without being too far out. No contact with my 710mm handlebars en route. I also use a strapped 600D bike cover for anti-theft (or at least to decrease the chance of crimes of opportunity). Only minor caveat is the spiked pedals need covering during transport to prevent wind-tears for which I used bubble-wrap and rubber bands.

Very well done, those alu hitch carriers have high load values.

Can you please show us close of up of the front tire bracket and the middle pole.

1up is the shizzle from the ones I have seen, I love the clean alu look, they are $$$ but looks like they are well built.

This is the double moto carrier I saw,
kinda pricey on amazon,
$4xx, but half the cost of new 1UP or KUAT.. brand I have

Costco as a nice one, dual ebike carrier at a reasonable price too:

https://www.costco.com/dk2-rear-hitch-mounted-e-bike-carrier.product.100855719.html

I watched a video for the question on the 15kw motor, the guys in Eastern Europe used a wood stand to transport the bike with the front wheel off in a mini van, I love this idea.
I will post a screen shot later.

I have no solution, just a light weight Swagman XTC2 that i bought in 2015, thinking it was a fix, only to discover its 35 lb rating per bike. Main problem is being Class 1. Hitch is too weak, so I use Curt straps to put some of the stress on the roof of my car and I'm close to 40 lbs/bike.

Lots of people put two 70 lb bikes on class 1 hitch racks 2 feet out, and drive around not knowing they're over the tongue weight.

So many words spent talking about transporting vehicles that do a fine job of transporting themselves!

How do y'all transport your cars and trucks?
